Player Ratings: Moldova 0-5 England

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starred in a 60-minute appearance while Frank Lampard continued his superb penalty record as the visitors generally outclassed their hapless hosts

    Stanislav Namasco

Started out with some confidence in denying Defoe and Oxlade-Chamberlain but, like his team-mates, hopelessly out of his depth and let the Tottenham striker’s shot through his hands far too easily.

Aleksandr Epureanu Flop of the Match

A torrid night that the defender will want to forget. Few redeeming features as Defoe tore him apart.

  • Igor Armas

    Igor Armas

Suffered at the back thanks to the Three Lions’ pressing game but was unlucky not to grab a consolation goal when his header from a well-worked short corner dropped inches wide.

  • Semion Bulgaru

    Semion Bulgaru

The right-back could hardly have helped the handball for the penalty but did not let hit affect his calmness in clearing the ball – when not pressured by a harrying England, that is.

  • Victor Golovatenco

    Victor Golovatenco

Tied up in knots all evening as England ran rampant, the defender was simply not equipped to deal with this level of opposition.

  • Alexander Gatskan

    Alexander Gatskan

Made one of Moldova’s arguably only two passes of note in the first half in a sign that he may be one of this side’s better players but incapable of sustaining any influence in midfield ahead of Gerrard and Lampard.

  • Alexandru Onica

    Alexandru Onica

It would be little surprise if the Chisinau police were out on a search for the midfielder at half-time, so absent was he from proceedings in the stadium in the parts of the game when the result was not yet in doubt. Solved his existential crisis, but little else, by passing the ball when not pressured in the second half and even had an ambitious long shot later on.

  • Artur Pătraş

    Artur Pătraş

His long-range effort that flew slightly wide in the first half was one of the only bright spots for Moldova. Showed a degree of fight even after the second and third goals went in.

  • Alexandru Suvorov
    2
    5
    2.50

    Alexandru Suvorov

Conceded fouls in trying to wrestle the ball back but his set-piece delivery was one of the only plusses for the home side in the first half. It was a surprise to see him withdrawn at the break.

  • Serghei Covalciuc
    1

    1.50

    Serghei Covalciuc

Roundly awful in open play, overrun by England and unable to respond with a bullish tackle or composed pass when he had the chance. One neat cross that Armas headed wide just before half-time but one cross does not a performance make.

  • Igor Picusciac
    1
    3

    Igor Picusciac

A helpless passenger as the lone striker in the first half but showed a moment of strength, if not accuracy in the finish, at the start of the second. Withdrawn after 77 minutes.

    Alexandru Dedov

It was a shock to see him replace Suvorov but less of one that he contributed as little as most of his team-mates.

  • Eugen Sidorenco

    Eugen Sidorenco

Spent 15 minutes on the pitch when replacing Picusciac but you would hardly have known it. The game had long gone and any shots were from outside the area as England dropped deep.

  • Joe Hart
    42
    17

    Joe Hart

Made one routine save past the 75-minute mark but otherwise was able to pick up another cap and relax.

  • Glen Johnson

    Glen Johnson

His eagerness to bomb forward was an important counterpoint to Milner's functionality and pressing and his cross for Lampard's header was superb. Moldova had neither the time nor ability to even test his defensive deficiencies.

  • Joleon Lescott
    29
    30
    2.50

    Joleon Lescott

One hairy moment about an hour in when, with the side complacent, his poor pass in defence could have let Moldova in but luckily his opponent's touch was equally bad. Otherwise a perfectly acceptable night from the centre-back.

  • John Terry
    56
    29
    2.50

    John Terry

Tried to play on after a late injury after England had used all of their substitutes but eventually came off anyway when it was realised that playing with 10 men would make very little difference. The dictionary definition of 'untroubled', though looked effectively immobile after his injury.

  • Leighton Baines
    57
    16

    Leighton Baines

Industry and energy down the left offered a different option to Oxlade-Chamberlain's desire to cut inside with his right foot. Broke his international duck in the streakiest of ways - his free kick's deflection off the wall was massive - but very encouraging from the Everton man.

  • Frank Lampard
    100
    32
    4.00

    Frank Lampard

An excellent performance from the midfielder, Moldova's physically unimposing engine room allowing him the time to make his trademark runs forward, one of which was rewarded with the second. His eighth penalty scored for England makes him the country's most successful ever.

  • James Milner
    39
    26
    3.50

    James Milner

Sometimes criticised at international level but his scurrying enthusiasm was a big part of England's first-half dominance. His first goal for the Three Lions, a powerful finish arriving late, was well deserved.

  • Steven Gerrard
    64
    28
    3.50

    Steven Gerrard

Under no noticeable midfield pressure, his old legs could run how they wanted and the captain had a very fine 45 minutes, pressing well and lifting a free kick just over before being rested at half-time.

  • Tom Cleverley
    69
    33
    3.50

    Tom Cleverley

That the No.10 role is not his ideal position, now and for the future, appeared clear, with his finishing often lacking, but the youngster was still able to have a real impact flitting around the forward.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    142
    45
    4.00

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Top of the Match

England’s best player for the fewer-than-60 minutes for which he was on the pitch. Bursting with endeavour, the Arsenal youngster was a constant thorn coming inside from the left wing, rewarded when Defoe finished from his intelligent through-ball. Taken off, surely, just to keep him as fresh as possible for Ukraine.

  • Jermain Defoe
    45
    19
    3.50

    Jermain Defoe

Guilty of missing a pretty easy chance in the opening 10 minutes but his running dragged the hapless Moldovan defenders in every direction. His strike for the goal should have been saved but a very good 50th cap for the Tottenham man.

Substitutions

  • Michael Carrick
    50
    25
    3.00

    Michael Carrick

Introduced for Gerrard at the break, Carrick sat deeper than the Liverpool man had as England relaxed and was as solid and unspectacular as ever - hardly a bad thing given the situation.

  • Danny Welbeck
    43
    23
    3.00

    Danny Welbeck

A notable contributor to Milner's goal after replacing Defoe with 22 minutes of normal time to go, the Manchester United man could prove little against such opposition but did well nonetheless.

  • Theo Walcott
    44
    25
    2.50

    Theo Walcott

Coming on for Oxlade-Chamberlain, the fellow Arsenal man looked quieter by comparison but cut back well for Milner's goal.
