Player Ratings: Puerto Rico 1-2 Spain

Goal.com takes a look at how each player performed for both sides during La Roja's comfortable victory over their lowly-ranked hosts in Bayamon on Wednesday evening

By Charlie Scott

  • Bill Gaudette

    Bill Gaudette

Pulled off some fantastic saves over the course of the match to deny Santi Cazorla and Fernando Torres. He perhaps should have done better with Cazorla's opener for Spain, but could do nothing about Fabregas' well-struck finish. Despite conceding two, a very good performance from the goalkeeper.

  • Alexis Rivera
    1
    3
    3.00

    Alexis Rivera

Rivera was under pressure from the off as Spain attacked relentlessly in the first half and was forced into doing a lot of running to close down the likes of Iniesta and Fabregas. He was positionally sound throughout, though, and put in some fine blocks and last-ditch challenges during the match.

  • Anthony Vázquez

Anthony Vázquez Flop of the Match

The defender was shown up by the lightning pace and trickery of Jesus Navas, as the Sevilla attacker beat him in one-on-one situations on numerous occasions. He was partly at fault for the second goal as Navas drifted past him before crossing to Fabregas.

  • John Krause
    1
    2
    2.50

    John Krause

Offered very little going forward and failed to track the runs of the Spain left-back Monreal, when he should have been helping out defensively. Had no impact on the game.

  • Richard Martinez
    2
    2
    2.50

    Richard Martinez

The centre-back was confident in the air and this helped limit Torres' effectiveness in the first half. A sloppy challenge on the Chelsea forward could have resulted in a penalty, though, and he tired dramatically in the second period.

  • Scott Jones

    2
    2.00

    Scott Jones

A shaky performance from the defender as his side spent large periods of the match on the back foot. He struggled with the dribbling ability of Iniesta and Cazorla and was beaten far too easily as the latter opened the scoring in the 42nd minute.

  • Andres Perez
    1
    2
    3.00

    Andres Perez

Another player who did not do enough when he had the ball to leave any real mark on the match, particularly offensively. When he did get possession he often hoofed it forward without even trying to find a team-mate. To his credit, he defended well as Puerto Rico pulled men back for much of the game.

  • Christian Arrieta
    1
    3
    2.50

    Christian Arrieta

Far too often the Puerto Rico captain was bypassed by Spain's midfield, as they cut through the home side at will. Outclassed by the likes of Xabi Alonso and Iniesta in the centre of the park, he was also booked in the first half for a rash challenge on Monreal.

  • Fernando Gonzalez
    2
    2
    2.50

    Fernando Gonzalez

Apart from one dangerous run early in the second half, the midfielder was quiet and failed to help out defensively. A disappointing performance.

  • Noah Delgado
    2
    2
    3.50

    Noah Delgado

Delgado had to be taken off in the second half after suffering from cramp and this was not surprising as he chased and harried Spain's attackers as they camped on the edge of the Puerto Rico penalty area for large chunks of the game. The defender was strong in the air in the first-half to limit the impact of Torres.

  • H. Ramos
    1
    3
    2.00

    H. Ramos

The striker was fighting what appeared to be a lost cause in the first half as his team-mates failed to provided him with any decent service to work off. A frustrating night for the attacker.

Substitutions

  • Marco Velez

    3.00

    Marco Velez

Was an early introduction in the second-half, to replace the struggling Jones. Did a far better job than the man he replaced and did well to limit the threat of Monreal on the left.

  • Marc Cintron
    3
    2
    3.50

    Marc Cintron

Will go down in Puerto Rican football history as the man who scored against the world champions, after he calmly slotted the ball past Pepe Reina in the second half - just moments after coming on as a substitute. Full of running during his 30-minute cameo.

  • Pepe Reina
    12
    4
    3.00

    Pepe Reina

The Liverpool goalkeeper had little to do in this match, apart from pick the ball out of the back of the net in the 65th minute, after being beaten by Cintron. Will have been disappointed to concede against a side so devoid of attacking intent.

  • Raúl Albiol
    12
    11
    2.50

    Raúl Albiol

Not much to do as Puerto Rico failed to create any chances of note going forward. Could do nothing about the goal as Ramos was beaten to the ball by Cintron.

  • Juanfran
    6
    5
    2.50

    Juanfran

Was withdrawn and replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa midway through the first-half, after pulling up whilst trying to push forward to support Jesus Navas down the right. No chance to have an impact on the match.

  • Monreal
    7
    6
    3.00

    Monreal

The Malaga full-back was able to bomb forward down the left as Puerto Rico defended deep. His overlapping runs provided another option for Spain as they went in search of goals, although he wasted his best chance by running the ball out of play late in the first half.

  • Piqué
    24
    7
    3.00

    Piqué

Headed against the post early on but, apart from that, left little impact on the game. Defensively, he was rarely called into action. Replaced by Ramos at half-time.

  • Santi Cazorla
    97

Santi Cazorla Top of the Match

A very good performance from the new Arsenal signing. He was full of attacking intent throughout and opened the scoring with a well-struck finish before half-time. Could easily have scored two or three if it hadn't been for some brilliant saves from Gaudette.

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    33
    12
    3.00

    Cesc Fàbregas

The Barcelona midfielder was composed on the ball throughout and popped up in the right place at the right time just before half-time to sweep home Jesus Navas' cross from the right.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    31
    4
    3.50

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Cut through the Puerto Rico backline on numerous occasions and did well to pick Torres out with a collection of well-weighted crosses. The Barca midfielder was full of purpose and always looked a threat as Puerto Rico struggled to cope with his movement on and off the ball.

  • Jesús Navas González
    24
    2
    3.50

    Jesús Navas González

The Sevilla winger tormented the Puerto Rico left-back Vazquez throughout the match, getting in behind the defender and supplying dangerous crosses seemingly at will. He provided the assist for Fabregas on the stroke of half-time to make it 2-0 to La Roja, dinking a fine cross towards the penalty spot after dribbling past Vazquez.

  • Xabi Alonso
    30
    5
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

The Real Madrid midfielder provided a solid base for Spain's attacks, and was always an option for his team-mates. His passing was superb as he put in a fine performance.

  • Fernando Torres
    46
    11
    3.00

    Fernando Torres

Wasted some good opportunities to score in the first half. Forced Gaudette into making a decent one-handed save from a header in the 23rd minute. Should also have had a penalty when he was brought down by Martinez inside the area. Will have been frustrated not to have got on the scoresheet on his 99th appearance for La Roja.

Substitutions

  • Sergio Ramos
    13
    11
    2.00

    Sergio Ramos

Let Cintron ghost past him far too easily for the Puerto Rico goal, in what was the only time he was really called into defensive action during his second-half cameo.

  • Arbeloa
    16
    5
    3.00

    Arbeloa

Got forward well from the right-back position after replacing Juanfran midway through the second-half. Arbeloa pulled the Puerto Rico defence out of position effectively to allow Navas more space to roam.

  • David Silva
    21
    5
    3.00

    David Silva

The Manchester City attacker performed well in the second-half after coming on at half-time. He linked up well with Cazorla in particular as Spain went in search of a third goal. Had one firm shot saved by Gaduette.

  • Busquets
    19
    11
    3.00

    Busquets

Was calm on the ball as always and played some neat passes in the second-half, but also showed his petulant side by picking up a silly booking for remonstrating with the referee over a decision.

  • Fernando Llorente
    16
    7
    3.00

    Fernando Llorente

The wantaway Athletic Bilbao striker wasted a glorious opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet, shortly after coming on, as he headed straight at Gaduette. Apart from that miss, he was competent on the ball and combined well with Cazorla and Fabregas.
