Europa League Player Ratings: Valencia 0-1 Atletico Madrid (Agg 2-5)

Goal.com rates the performances of the players on show as the Colchoneros progress following a narrow victory thanks to Adrian in the second leg of this all-Spanish semi-final

By Jonathan Mitchell

  • Diego Alves

    Diego Alves

The Brazil international was a virtual spectator but did what little he had to effectively, including looking smart to race off his line and cut out an Arda Turan cross just before it reached Falcao in the 41st minute. Had no chance of saving Adrian's wonder strike.

  • Adil Rami
    2
    1
    3.00

    Adil Rami

Like Ricardo Costa, the France international had little to do for the most part. Was tested more often in the second half, but could not be faulted for Adrian's goal.

  • Barragán
    7
    1
    3.50

    Barragán

Right-back began to put his footprint on the game around the 20-minute mark, with fantastic runs and crosses, two of which which picked out Soldado, who directed one over the top and flicked another wide. Another cross appeared to have won second-half penalty for handball.

  • Jordi Alba
    10
    1
    3.50

    Jordi Alba

Flying full-back was a bundle of energy in the first and relentlessly drove at the Atletico defence. Was always willing to get up and support the attack and caused all sorts of problems - but never quite found the final ball.

  • Ricardo Costa
    1
    4
    3.00

    Ricardo Costa

Did not have much to do at the heart of the defence, but like his goalkeeper, what tasks he was given, he completed impressively, typified by a moment early in the second half in which he read the danger and confidently and commandingly stepped out and dispossessed Falcao.

  • Albelda
    3
    3
    3.00

    Albelda

The veteran Valencia skipper partnered Dani Parejo in the centre of midfield, where he put himself about, including an early 'reducer' on Arda Turan, which limited the Turk's impact for much of the encounter.

  • Sofiane Feghouli
    5
    2
    2.50

    Sofiane Feghouli

The France-born Algeria international started on the right of midfield but was given something of a licence to roam in order to hurt Atletico. Went close with a shot that was deflected towards goal by Soldado and another effort which flew inches over. Drifted out of the game entirely in the second period.

  • Canales
    12
    1
    3.50

    Canales

Real Madrid loanee put in a classy display, in which he was elegant on the ball and combined with Jordi Alba to great effect. Tested Courtois with low, angled drive in the 39th minute. Unfortunately, stretchered off early in the second half.

  • Parejo
    2
    2
    3.00

    Parejo

Was always available to take possession in the centre of midfield, and kept things nice and simple when he got it. Quickly fed those in front of him with short, sharp passes to maintain their almost constant stream of attacks

  • Jonas
    1
    6
    2.50

    Jonas

Floated in behind Soldado and threatened to cause problems without ever quite managing to do so. Best efforts came in the 21st minute when he forced a fine double save from Courtois. That was the extent of his impact and he was withdrawn in the 57th minute.

  • Roberto Soldado
    3
    3
    3.00

    Roberto Soldado

Put decent opportunity over the top from eight yards in 23rd minute, although he could be forgiven due to being on the stretch. Flicked a header wide just after the half hour. Never quite offered the threat he should have as Godin kept him under control.

Substitutions

  • Jérémy Mathieu
    2
    3
    2.50

    Jérémy Mathieu

Replaced Canales in the 59th minute and was woefully caught out of position for Adrian's goal the next. Had shot cleared off line in injury time.

  • Tino Costa
    3
    3
    3.00

    Tino Costa

Argentine midfielder took Parejo's place in the 68th minute. Added energy to Valencia midfield at a time it was beginning to flag. Had a few ambitious shots at goal, one of which forced a decent stop from Courtois.

  • Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia
    2
    3
    2.50

    Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia

Frontman came on in the 57th minute in place of the ineffectual Jonas. Never made much impression.

  • Thibaut Courtois
    18
    2
    3.00

    Thibaut Courtois

Made impressive start, taking Canales free kick under intense pressure, which was just one example of many in which he displayed fine handling. Also made great double save to twice deny Jonas in 21st minute and late stop to deny Tino Costa.

  • Diego Godín Leal
    9
    2
    3.50

    Diego Godín Leal

The no-nonsense centre-back has the gladiatorial about him, and was extremely proficient in holding the back line together despite a Valencia onslaught. Popped up in important positions time and again, including clearing Mathieu shot off the line in injury time.

  • Filipe Luis
    4
    3
    3.00

    Filipe Luis

Involved in an early tussle with Soldado which set the tone for a difficult first half. Struggled to cope as Barragan ran at him constantly but was never quite punished and given a much easier time in the second half.

  • Juanfran
    2
    2
    2.50

    Juanfran

Right-back was often left two-on-one against Canales and Jordi Alba with Diego reluctant to help out by tracking back. Another Atletico defender who was offered relief after formation change in the second half.

  • Miranda
    5
    1
    3.50

    Miranda

Brazilian played as right-sided centre-back and was often forced to squeeze out to the right to help Juanfran in his two-on-one battle. Did so to impressive effect, and was strong in the tackle and impressive in his positioning, clearing several crosses from the left.

  • Mario Suárez
    2
    2
    2.50

    Mario Suárez

Tried to stem the tide of Valencia attacks. However, he was fighting a losing battle which Parejo and Albelda came out of firmly on top, and he was unsurprisingly replaced at half-time.

  • Tiago
    2
    4
    2.50

    Tiago

Like, Mario, the Portugal international could do little to prevent wave after wave of attack beating them down in first half. Failed to put his foot on the ball and help his team, though, and poor night ended with red card for slap shortly after he was initially unfairly penalised for handball.

  • Arda Turan
    7
    1
    3.00

    Arda Turan

Early crunching challenge from Albelda seemed to put Turkish wideman off his stride. On the one occasion he did have the opportunity to make an impression on a counterattack, his weak cross from the right was easily cut out by Diego Alves. Improved in second half.

  • Diego Ribas
    6
    1
    3.00

    Diego Ribas

Brazilian made a bright start but was non-existent for vast majority of the first half, most notably in his attempts to help out Juanfran behind him, which were zero. Came to life again in the second period, and picked out Adrian with a fantastic pass for his goal.

  • Adrián
    12
    0
    3.50

    Adrián

Quiet outing until the minutes before half-time in which he knocked the ball round the advancing Diego Alves but could not get on the end of his own flick. Continued to look lively in second half and scored stunning goal to open scoring.

  • Radamel Falcao
    9
    1
    2.50

    Radamel Falcao

Colombian saw very little of the ball and suffered from a lack of service. However, he was presented with a fantastic chance by Gabi just after the hour mark, but fired straight at Diego Alves.

Substitutions

  • Toto Salvio

    Toto Salvio

Given the final 16 minutes in place of Arda Turan. Saw goal-bound drive deflected wide in stoppage time.

  • Gabi
    5
    1
    3.00

    Gabi

A half-time replacement for Mario. Made immediate impression with fine standing tackle to dispossess Canales in the box, which inadvertently ended the influential midfielder's night, and neat slide-rule pass to put Falcao in on goal.

  • Koke
    4
    1
    0.00

    Koke

Tooked Diego's place for final six minutes.
