Champions League Player Ratings: Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea (Agg 2-3)

Roberto Di Matteo's team pulled out an incredible triumph despite falling two behind with 10 men after John Terry's inexplicable sending-off, Fernando Torres was the late hero

  • Víctor Valdés

    Víctor Valdés

No keeper would have been able to do anything about Ramires' finish, and the Blaugrana stopper was on hand to capitalise on Kalou's hesitation in the second half.

  • Piqué
    117
    282
    2.50

    Piqué

Looked groggy after colliding with Valdes and was withdrawn midway through the first half after being out-muscled by Drogba.

  • Carles Puyol

    Carles Puyol

The nature of Chelsea's performance needed very little in the way of defending but Drogba still got the better of the veteran centre-back, on the left of the back three, on one too many occasions.

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    110
    322
    2.50

    Cesc Fàbregas

No significant impact from the former Arsenal man, involved in all the passing as usual but providing none of the punch with which you would normally associate him. Brought off for Keita on 75 minutes.

  • Xavi
    113
    278

    Xavi

As clinical with the ball at his feet as you would expect but the maestro never delivered the vital assist that his side badly needed.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    208
    238
    3.00

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

The most impressive of Barca's frustrated front line, in both his supplying of through-balls and receiving of them. His calm, passed finish to make it 2-0 was of fine quality. Deserved better than the result.

  • Javier Mascherano
    105

    Javier Mascherano

Did the better of the three defenders in that Drogba preferred to target Puyol. The Argentine came close at the other end with a long-range shot in the first half that went not too far over.

  • Busquets
    83
    288
    3.00

    Busquets

In support of the attackers he made himself available well and even scored a rare goal by breaking forward with several others and being in the right place at the right time. Lampard gave him little worry.

  • Alexis Sánchez
    82
    306
    2.50

    Alexis Sánchez

One weak header early in the second half that dropped wide may haunt the Chilean. His interplay with Messi on the edge of the box was often sublime but not when it counted.

  • Lionel Messi
    175
    625
    2.50

    Lionel Messi

Uncharacteristically timid in front of goal. He should have buried his first-half chance when through centrally but shot straight at Cech, and his penalty against the bar was a real shock. The wait for a goal against Chelsea goes on, but his through-ball for Iniesta's goal and general interplay was excellent. Frustration manifested in a booking for pulling back Lampard.

  • Cuenca
    98
    283
    3.00

    Cuenca

Looked out of his depth for much of the first half, misplacing passes and ending attacking moves. His cut across the box for Busquets' goal was good when it mattered, though, and he drew a smart stop from Cech before his substitution for Tello.

    Daniel Alves

Came on midway through the first half and was energetic as usual but just could not blast his way past the rigidly excellent Cole.

  • Seydou Keita
    64
    239
    2.50

    Seydou Keita

Virtually invisible after replacing Fabregas as Chelsea grew in confidence and dug in.

  • Tello
    70
    253
    2.50

    Tello

After a poor showing against Real Madrid it was a surprise to see him introduced before Pedro when Cuenca was replaced, and he was anonymous as the hosts failed to find the breakthrough.

  • Petr Cech
    1063
    38
    3.50

    Petr Cech

The referee was perhaps convinced by the partisan crowd to award the keeper a yellow for timewasting at goal kicks, but Cech otherwise was excellent. He saved well despite a poor Messi finish in the first half and was generally blameless for the Barca goals. Particularly smart in blocking from Cuenca in the second half.

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    747

    3.50

    Branislav Ivanovic

Had to move into the centre early on when Cahill came off and, barring the odd through-ball getting past him early on, which is almost contractual against Barca, acquitted himself well. He, too, however, will miss the final as he picked up another yellow.

  • Ashley Cole
    1079
    61
    3.50

Ashley Cole Top of the Match

Outstanding defensive display against the lively Cuenca and Alves, highlighte by some alert interceptions and well-timed challenges. Still at the top of his game.

  • Gary Cahill
    546
    47
    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Subbed in the 12th minute after failing to shake off a hamstring injury suffered making an early block.

  • John Terry
    468
    557
    1.50

John Terry Flop of the Match

Sent off after 37 minutes for recklessly kneeing Alexis in the back off the ball for no apparent reason, a moment of madness which cost his team dearly and was a hammer-blow to his own reputation. That not to mention his playing onside of several men for Busquets' opener.

  • Ramires
    1198
    26
    3.50

    Ramires

Arrived from nowhere to give his team hope with a brilliant chip over Valdes seconds after a booking that ruled him out of the final. Dogged in defending also but the timing of his contribution was utterly perfect - it's hard to see the result being possible without him.

  • Frank Lampard
    730
    67
    3.00

    Frank Lampard

His was the through-ball which Ramires latched onto for the goal and what an important one it was. Not as mobile to defend as others and booked during the second half as things got scrappy, but he did well.

  • John Obi Mikel
    591
    80
    3.00

    John Obi Mikel

Picked up a yellow card in the first half and did not dominate the Barca midfield as he had in the first leg but, in the anchor role, he did his part.

  • Raúl Meireles
    532
    86
    3.00

    Raúl Meireles

He, too, will miss the final after a yellow card too many and he was perhaps the least impressive of Chelsea's midfielders, but got as stuck in as he could.

  • Juan Mata
    460
    160
    2.50

    Juan Mata

A luxury even with 11 men in Chelsea's gameplan, the Spaniard had little to do when on the pitch and was rightly the man sacrificed for Kalou in the second half.

  • Didier Drogba
    954
    72
    3.00

    Didier Drogba

Caused panic in the Barcelona defence whenever he had the ball - which was not very often. Usually capable in defence but gave away a penalty by mistiming his tackle on Fabregas - and was lucky to see it spurned. However, that was the exception as he put in a strong shift at both ends, wearing himself out before Torres replaced him with 10 minutes left.

Substitutions

  • José Bosingwa
    769
    43
    3.50

    José Bosingwa

Brought on early for Cahill and then became an emergency centre-back when Terry was sent off. You might have expected a disaster but the Portuguese was more than solid in the unfamiliar role in an effort that merits a great deal of credit.

  • Fernando Torres
    1587
    46
    3.50

    Fernando Torres

Lucky not to be punished for losing his man after coming on late, the goal being ruled out for offside - but came good when it mattered. The £50 million man looked like his old self as he seized upon the stoppage-time chance, rampaging into space and rounding Valdes to put the icing on a famous cake.

  • Salomon Kalou
    447
    145
    2.50

    Salomon Kalou

His only notable contribution as a subsitute for Mata was hesitating on a counterattacking chance - not that it mattered in the end as Barca did not capitalise.
