Goals from Ryo Miyaichi and David Ngog helped Bolton survive a tricky encounter at The Den, as Owen Coyle's side defeated Championship side Millwall 2-0 to put their name in the hat for the FA Cup quarter finals.
Miyaichi's excellent early opener set Bolton on their way and victory was secured via Ngog's low shot from the edge of the Millwall box early in the second half.
The home side had won 12 of their last 16 encounters with Bolton in the capital but they were largely outclassed in this fifth round defeat.
It took just two minutes for the Premier League outfit to make their mark. A quickly taken free-kick from Sam Ricketts was played over the top of Millwall's Alan Dunne for Miyaichi to accelerate onto.
The Japanese winger took a fantastic first touch inside the right-back and curled a sublime shot past Steve Mildenhall to give the Trotters the lead.
Miyaichi continued to cause Dunne problems, finding the room on the left flank to drill a low cross into the penalty box.
The ball ended up at the feet of Tuncay Sanli, who had a surprising amount of time to turn and strike at goal from 10 yards. This time, Mildenhall was able to match the effort, parrying the ball back to safety.
On 15 minutes, the away side had another big chance as holes continued to open in the Millwall defence. Ngog carried the ball towards the goal and slipped a pass to Fabrice Muamba in the left channel.
The midfielder had time to do better than he did though, the resulting shot was fired wildly over the crossbar.
Millwall did manage to carve a couple of half-chances though, most notably through Darius Henderson's shot on the turn after the ball dropped from an Andy Keogh knock-down.
Despite the odd rally from the home side, tensions were high and not helped by an alarmingly porous defence and little creativity in a first half that was began at too quick a pace for the Championship strugglers.
But they did manage to find their feet despite the best efforts of referee Kevin Friend to irk the home fans.
Scott Barron's overlapping run from left-back opened up Bolton's defence for the first real time. His deep cross was met by Liam Feeney at the back post, but the close attentions of Ricketts blocked the shot enough for Bogdan to collect.
The pressure continued and Millwall nearly forced an equaliser just before half-time. Harry Kane, the Tottenham loanee, hooked a ball into the path of Feeney on the right wing.
Feeney found room to deliver a low cross and as it evaded the onrushing Henderson, David Wheater's slash at the ball saw it cartwheel just over his own goal. It was a heart-stopping moment for the centre-back and as Bolton survived the resulting corner, the half-time whistle was blown.
Minutes after the break, a Barron corner was met by the captain Paul Robinson but his connection was just too deft and drifted wide of Bogdan's right-hand post.
Liam Trotter's cross-cum-shot was tipped over by Bogdan and the Hungarian keeper was able to watch Barron's right foot shot from range drift over his bar as Millwall mounted a mini-revival.
However it was halted just before the hour mark as Tuncay collected a loose clearance and rolled the ball into Ngog.
The French striker, who had been felled in the box minutes earlier, turned on the edge of the box and fired a low left-footed drive past Mildenhall to double the Trotters' lead.
Millwall did their best to fight their way back into the game and were it not for a fine double save from Bogdan, firstly off Kane's header and Keogh's follow-up, they would have pulled a goal back.
Bolton seemed content to relax on their 2-0 lead and were comfortable enough in the driving rain.
Barron's deep cross with 15 minutes to play almost found Keogh for a tap in but the forward, who had switched to the right, failed to reach it.
Coyle's side were happy to settle with the two goal lead they had and professionally kept Millwall at bay for the remainder of the game.
The Trotters are forging something of a cup reputation under their Scottish manager and fans will be desperate to make Wembley for the second successive season.
For the home fans, the FA Cup journey is over for another year and the club will be left to focus on Championship survival.
