Liam Feeney's spectacular stoppage-time strike sunk the Saints, who had themselves recovered from a deficit to lead until late, while Adam Lallana stood out for the hosts
By George Ankers at St Mary's Stadium
Two top-class low saves in succession from James Henry and Liam Trotter were a highlight of a good performance from the backup keeper.
The young central defender is still inexperienced but he did a decent job of keeping Millwall's strikeforce quiet - the midfielders were the problem.
Lost control of things when attacking down the left once or twice and probably should have been more alert to the danger at Trotter’s opener. Wasted a good chance when it broke to him in the area in the second half.
Had some problems dealing with N'Guessan at times and did not offer much going forward.
The experienced Portuguese had a nervy start but improved as the game went on.
A cut above most of his team-mates and notably did not lose his head as others did when the Millwall opener went in. It seemed inevitable that the midfielder would cause the equaliser and he took it very well before crashing a free-kick against the bar. One way or another, Lallana is surely a Premier League player in waiting.
The captain should have done more to take hold of the midfield when the Saints were suffering, though he had moments of promising collaboration with Lallana.
The Brazilian did not inject much of his usual creativity, but he had one good headed chance saved by Forde. Was replaced after getting booked.
Unable to make a great impact on his return from injury, the midfielder was withdrawn after 60 minutes.
The Belgian winger provided some useful crosses from the right, notably that which Guly do Prado utilised to force a good save out of David Forde. Came off with 15 minutes left.
The Japanese grew into the game in the second half, with one notable dribble and shot in particular early on, but in the end could not penetrate.
Probably justly had an effort ruled out for offside after coming on in the second half. Otherwise quiet.
Did little to affect the match after replacing De Ridder.
The fans' hero put in a good shift after coming on and his goal to take the lead, though a short-lived one, was of great quality.
An assured performance, with top saves from Do Prado and Lallana in either half particularly of note.
Found it hard to deal with Lallana who drifted in and out of the left flank, but had more luck when Guly do Prado was stationed there and, later, when the Saints seemed to abandon the position altogether.
The central defender was never able to keep the Saints strikeforce completely quiet, but restricted Lee to some uncomfortable positions.
De Ridder was allowed to cross dangerously in the first half and the left-back could have done more to stop it.
Lambert and Lallana chiefly posed problems, but the centre-back did just enough to stop Southampton from turning spells of dominance into victory.
The former Saints loanee was sporadically threatening but popped up at the right time to nod in his side's second before being withdrawn.
Forced a good save out of Bialkowski but too often a peripheral figure.
The less spectacular of the Millwall midfielders, but got on with his job with enough industry.
The right midfielder was one of the away side's keenest threats, setting up N'Guessan's second goal and interchanging with Trotter for the first.
His opener was well worked, despite being allowed space by Southampton and generally the midfielder impressed for the visitors.
Millwall's main threat was from their midfielders rather than their forwards and the youngster had little bearing on the game.
Only a brief cameo, but what a cameo. A brilliant stoppage-time goal to win the match, cutting in and dispatching the ball well into the far corner.
