Blackpool outclassed Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 to book a trip to Premier League side Everton in the FA Cup fifth round with a ruthless showing at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.
Early goals from Matt Phillips and Lomana LuaLua set the tone for the Championship side, before Ludovic Sylvestre’s second-half strike put the game beyond doubt as they dispatched their League One opponents with consummate ease at the second attempt.
Seasiders boss Ian Holloway set his stall out from the start, opting for an attacking quartet of top scorer Kevin Phillips alongside Matt Phillips, LuaLua and Tom Ince.
Owls captain Rob Jones returned from an ankle injury to marshall the defence, but his back line struggled to deal with the constant threat posed by their opponent’s dangerous forward line.
The game began positively for the hosts though, and Ryan Lowe spurned a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the opening stages.
The striker took advantage of Alex Baptiste’s defensive slip-up to race clear-through on goal, but he should have done better instead of shooting straight at keeper Matt Gilks.
The game soon became an uphill battle for the League One outfit, when Blackpool responded in devastating fashion minutes later.
Matt Phillips picked up the ball on the edge of the box and rolled a delightful finish beyond the outstretched Stephen Bywater for his 10th goal of the season.
Gary Megson’s side were left with even more of a mountain to climb soon after, when Blackpool broke on the counter-attack to double the lead.
Kevin Phillips fed LuaLua, who surged forward before steadying himself on the edge of the box and unleashing a sublime curling effort beyond the helpless Bywater.
Ian Holloway’s side continued to assert their dominance in possession as Wednesday struggled to gather any kind of momentum.
They nearly pulled back a lifeline in the dying stages of the half though when Rob Jones rose unmarked to meet a corner at the back post, but his bullet header drew a fine reaction save from Gilks.
Although Wednesday tried to force a way back, the contest was effectively over quarter of an hour into the second half when Sylvestre picked up Matt Phillips’ back-heel and cut inside before producing a carbon-copy of LuaLua’s spectacular strike to further increase their lead.
Matt Phillips missed a great chance to make it four when he accelerated onto LuaLua’s deft through-ball, but the frontman dragged his close-range effort narrowly wide with only the keeper to beat.
The 1953 winners will be hoping to cause an upset when they travel to Goodison Park in the next stage of the competition, the first time they have reached the fifth round in 22 years.
