The Seasiders wil play Premier League outfit Everton thanks to three splendid goals against a poor home side that rarely looked like scoring
By Sam Bisby at Hillsborough
The Owls shot-stopper didn’t fair too well in the early minutes of the match, with the first shot on target resulting in a goal from Matt Phillips that Bywater had plenty of time to see, but didn’t react in time. Blackpool’s second was another that came from distance and was watched in by the hosts’ ‘keeper. With less than 20 minutes played, Bywater proceeded to miss-kick a clearance and sliced the ball almost into the path of Kevin Phillips, but was knocked out of danger by a reactive Wednesday defender.
The centre-back didn’t have the best of times thanks to poor positioning and the lack of urgency when Blackpool were attacking the Wednesday goal.
Not a great game for the full-back who was the main culprit in Blackpool’s second, with Bennett failing to chase down LuaLua effectively and allowed the veteran to loft the ball from distance into the far corner.
The right-back did little to help his team as the former Liverpool man struggled to create a balance of effective defending and sharp attacking. Allowed the Blackpool attackers through the back-line too many times and was at fault for the third goal letting Sylvestre shoot past Bywater.
The Frenchman was highly ineffective and his defending was slack at dangerous times, failing to deal with the spirited Seasiders at most times.
The Owls’ captain made a various good clearances and strong tackles, but didn’t hold the line well enough and saw his defence frequently opened by the Seasiders’ attacks.
An ineffective display from the winger who failed to utilise his crossing ability and let the men in the middle down on a regular basis.
A mediocre performance that saw the midfielder allow the visitors to advance too many times and when Blackpool let the hosts attack as they sat back, the 31-year-old couldn’t take advantage of it.
Out on the left, Palmer looked good at kick-off and had a positive burst of energy about him, but as the game progressed he couldn’t muster any real opportunities for his side.
The former Birmingham City man had a frustrating night and struggled to make an impact, with a number of failed runs and poor shooting.
Had a great opportunity for Wednesday in the opening minutes after going through one-on-one with Gilks, but the striker’s shooting wasn’t particularly effective and his weak shot at the Seasiders ‘keeper was easily kept out. Had a handful more efforts, but his accuracy continued to let him down.
Arrived in the game just after the restart to no effect.
Was the first ‘keeper to be tested, as Lowe managed to squeeze past the Blackpool defenders, but Gilks was ready for the striker’s tame shot and kept it out easy enough. Wasn’t forced into action again until after the half-hour mark, saving a dangerous header at the back-post following a corner. Was never really threatened for the rest of the game and kept out anything that came his way with confidence.
A solid performer in the centre of defence who always stood his ground during set-pieces and cleared successfully with strong challenges and dominant headers.
The Liverpool loanee stayed strong at left-back and dealt with the threats of Lines and Otsemobor well, although the attacks rarely gave the full-back a hard time.
The full-back had a few moments in the early part of the game and his bad positioning almost allowed the hosts to open the scoring. As the game advanced, Eardley gradually got into gear and halted the progress of the Wednesday wingers pacing down his flank.
A decent performance for a man who passed efficiently around the Wednesday players and got play moving on a regular basis.
Passed well and around the quizzical Wednesday players to get the play flowing and had an easy job in getting the ball up top to start attacking the hosts on a regular basis until the visitors felt their three goal margin was enough to sit back on.
The midfielder was a hive of activity during the whole game, passing into space and keeping the game moving. The Frenchman capped off a fine game with a superb effort that mirrored LuaLua’s first-have conversion, with the attacker holding off his man enough to curl the ball in from outside the area and over an outstretched Bywater.
Opened the scoring with the hosts’ defence pre-occupied with an injured man. Shooting from distance, Phillips took advantage of the space around him and squeezed the ball into the far corner out of the reach of Bywater.
The former Sunderland man who made the replay possible wasn’t particularly on form in this game and rarely threatened the hosts’ defence, instead made himself a nuisance in the Wednesday box and allowed the other attackers to run the night.
Converted his energetic start into a sensational goal from outside the box, with the striker lofting the ball over Bywater and curled it into the ‘keeper’s top corner. Kept on pushing for most of the remaining minutes.
The young winger was one of the least effective Blackpool men, but the former Liverpool man did do enough to cause some problems down the flanks, but just didn’t do enough to create solid chances.
he midfielder came on late and did well to keep Wednesday from getting back into the game.
Came on for Kevin Phillips to keep the victors fresh.
Came on in the dying minutes.
