Brighton secured their progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Amex Stadium, with a Mike Williamson own goal proving to be the difference between the two teams.
The first half saw both sides playing attractive passing football, but they struggled to overcome the congestion in the centre of midfield. There were few genuine goalscoring chances in the opening period, but Brighton’s Will Buckley was clearly giving Davide Santon some problems on the home side’s right-hand side.
The second period saw Newcastle have the best of the opportunities, but having seen Yohan Cabaye go unpunished for an apparent stamp on Adam El-Abd, an own goal from Williamson gave Brighton the lead in the 76th minute after some superb work from the energetic Buckley.
The home side did not relinquish their advantage and secured another cup upset thanks to some dogged defending.
Brighton had made only one change to their team from their previous match, a 2-1 away victory against Peterborough United, with the injured Marcos Painter making way for Adam El-Abd in defence.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s captain Fabricio Coloccini failed a late fitness test after picking up a groin injury, and was replaced in defence by James Perch in the only change from their 5-2 away defeat to Fulham in the Premier League.
Both sides started brightly, keen to play their respective brands of passing football, lining up in identical shapes in midfield. However, neither side created any genuine goalscoring opportunities in the first ten minutes.
Shortly after, a hopeful long ball found its way to Leon Best in Brighton’s penalty area, but the Newcastle forward dragged his shot on goal wide. However, the home side found a response of their own, with a run from the right by Buckley causing some alarm in the away side’s penalty area in the 15th minute, but he hesitated slightly, and could not get a shot on goal.
The impressive Buckley was giving Santon some problems from Brighton’s right, and in the 28th minute he easily went past the Italian and got a cross in, which was gathered comfortably by Newcastle’s goalkeeper Tim Krul.
The home side then had another good opportunity thanks to a breakaway started by goalkeeper Peter Brezovan in the 31st minute in Brighton’s penalty area. A sea of blue and white shirts flooded forward, but striker Craig Mackail-Smith sent his shot wide after some good work by the Seagulls’ midfield.
However, Hatem Ben Arfa combined well with Danny Simpson for Newcastle in the 34th minute and forced a counter-attack of their own, and it took some desperate defending and lucky ricochets for the ball to be cleared for a corner to the away side in one of their better attacking moves of the half.

The second half began with the home side making a substitution, bringing Alan Navarro on for Matt Sparrow in the centre of midfield. However, after a quiet few minutes, it was Newcastle who created the first real chances after some good play by Shola Ameobi, who used all his trickery to spin away from the defence and set up Best, whose shot was saved well by Brezovan.
From the resulting corner, Danny Guthrie saw a fierce volley deflected over the bar, and yet another chance fell to Newcastle from another corner, with Ameobi drawing a parrying save from Brezovan as the away side began to find some attacking momentum.
However, neither side could take real control of the game, and it began to simmer as Simpson upended Mackail-Smith, for which the former Manchester United man was given a yellow card.
More controversy followed as Cabaye appeared to stamp on El-Abd in the 62nd minute. However, referee Lee Probert appeared not to see any wrongdoing, so no further action was taken against the Frenchman, though replays seemed to suggest he did lash out against the Brighton man.
With the game approaching its end, Buckley used his considerable pace and saw his effort take a wicked deflection off of Williamson, which carried the ball into the Newcastle net to give the home side a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute.
There was still time for some late controversy though, as a Cabaye shot from outside the area was cleared by a deflection off of the outstretched arms of Ashley Barnes, but the game ended with the score unchanged, sending Gus Poyet's side into the fifth round.
