Mirandes 2-1 Espanyol (Agg. 4-4, Mirandes win on away goals): Caneda's injury-time winner continues third-tier club's fairytale in the Copa del Rey

Pablo's second-half equaliser and a remarkable last minute strike takes Pouso's side into the semi-finals of the Spanish cup after Rui Fonte had put the Catalans ahead

Mirandes, Copa del Rey

Mirandes miraculously defeated Espanyol 2-1 at the Municipal de Anduva with a goal deep in injury-time as they continued their Copa del Rey fairytale, securing a semi-final berth for the first time in the club's history.

Rui Fonte had put the Liga outfit ahead early in the second-half, before Pablo Infante Munoz drew his side level a little over ten minutes later. Espanyol came under incredible pressure in the closing stages, and in stoppage time Mirandes netted the winner when defender Cesar Caneda leapt highest to head the third-tier side into the semi finals.

In a hostile opening, the Primera Division outfit were unable to assert their superiority on Mirandes, who enjoyed extended periods of possession and created several chances.

Espanyol appeared intimidated by the close proximity of the crowd as they squandered possession in the early exchanges. Alain Arroyo could have volleyed Mirandes ahead after - much to the disbelief of the opposition's defence - the offside flag failed to materialise. The striker, however, was off-balance as he connected with the ball, resulting in Kiko Casilla making an easy save.

The Barcelona-based side were unable to create much for themselves as Mirandes limited them to long range efforts that Romaric fired wide. Instead, it was Carlos Pouso's side that had the better of the first-half and Arroyo came close to capitalising on the hesitancy of the Espanyol defence.

The Catalans failed to clear a throw-in allowing the No. 9 to sneak inbetween two defenders, but the ball skidded off the turf before he could make a sizeable connection as Casilla held on.

Espanyol emerged for the second-half invigorated after a poor first 45 minutes and took the lead within a minute of the restart. Vladimir Weiss was denied by a tremendous save from Nauzet Perez before the ball was turned in a second time which Rui Fonte squeezed home.

Despite falling behind, Mirandes were not to be disheartened, and drew level through a beautiful strike from Pablo. The semi-professional striker cut inside before unleashing a memorable shot that was deflected, taking it away from Casilla, the ball eventually nestling in the bottom corner.

Mauricio Pochettino's side then drew out a first rate save from Perez when Hector Moreno directed a corner kick on target. However, the keeper reacted brilliantly to the defender's bullet-header, tipping the ball over the top of the cross bar.

The home side continued to pursue a winner and their persistence was rewarded deep into injury time. All 11 men for Mirandes pushed forward for a free-kick and it was defender Caneda who provided the final touch.

The third-tier club will next face either Athletic Bilbao or Mallorca in the semi-finals, with the Basques taking a two goal advantage into the second leg.
