Player Ratings: Wolves 0-1 Birmingham City
In a rather drab affair it was luck that ended up winning the tie, with the Championship outfit coming out as surprise victors thanks to Wade Elliott's solitary strike
By Sam Bisby at Molineux
Was untroubled for much of the first-half, with the exception of Davies forcing the Wolves man to make a good save at his near post to keep out the defender’s dangerous header. In the second period he wasn’t faced with too much either besides the goal where he didn’t place himself well enough to clear the attack.
The full-back did a decent job and halted the visitors' attacks numerous times, making good challenges and effective clearances. Had a couple of shots, but often lacked accuracy.
A reasonable display from the full-back. Stayed strong in the tackle and saved his side from going down10 minutes from time after making a last ditch challenge on Rooney in the heart of the penalty area.
Defended well up until the goal, allowing Birmingham too much of the ball during the attack and failed to close down his man.
Like Stearman, did well before the goal, but the captian lost his positioning, letting the visitors to take advantage and score the winner.
The midfielder held the ball well and carried the play forward when required, but didn’t offer too much else.
A reasonable outing for the 23-year-old Icelandic. The midfielder spread the play well when in possession and even had his chance on goal, forcing a save out of Colin Doyle from distance. Was replaced in the 57th minute.
Had many-a-break down the right-flank and supplied crosses constantly, but it wasn’t enough in the end, due to the lack of conviction from the strike force.
Not a great display from the wideman, who did his fair share of running, but his passing was ineffective and did little else to help his team on the attacking front.
Looked strong and bright, having a good share of the ball and chances, but the stocky striker couldn’t convert anything that came his way.
Started brightly and never gave up for Wolves, but his lack of shots and bad positioning led to the hosts having little in the way of solid goalmouth action.
Came on late to no avail.
Came on for Jonsson and almost made an instant impact with a long-range effort that just drifted wide of Doyle’s net.
Arrived in the second-half, but didn’t have his usual positive influence on his side.
Wasn’t tested much in the opening 45 minutes, with Ebanks-Blake coming closest to getting on target with some real conviction. Did well in the second period to fend off the little that Wolves had to throw at him, keeping out a late effort from Hunt.
Was bugged by Hammill down his flank on numerous occasions and allowed the winger to make too many crosses for the Wolves attackers waiting in the area. Was in the right place to influence the winner, putting the ball in towards goal for Elliott to finish off.
Dealt with Hunt quite effectively, with the winger rarely threatening thanks to the full-back’s pressure and good tackling.
Didn’t look too troubled by Doyle, but the strength of Ebanks-Blake often unsettled the former Aston Villa man. Had a good chance to put his team in the lead just before half-time after forcing a save out of De Vries with an accurate header, before doing his job effectively at the other end moments later, sliding in on Ebanks-Blake before the forward got through on goal.
Strong in the tackle and dealt well with Doyle and Ebanks-Blake. Kept the backline in order and rewarded with a clean sheet.
Didn’t have too much of an influence on the game, not feeding Rooney enough of the ball as the forward would have liked.
Not a particularly impressive performance from the midfielder who had a worrying knock with Murphy in the first-half that left him dazed for a few minutes. Got forward when needed, but wasn’t very effective and couldn’t influence the game as well as he could have.
Worked well in the hole in front of the defenders, adding an extra barrier between them and the Wolves attackers. Passed well, but sometimes let the odd one go astray and was lucky not to have handed Wolves a penalty or at least a free-kick after a poor challenge on Ebanks-Blake on the perimeter of the area.
Another player who was quiet for the Blues. The midfielder passed well, but couldn’t supply lone man Rooney with the service he required. However, he was the key man in the end, scoring the winning goal thanks to a bit of luck and his good positioning.
Not the best display from the youngster who stayed pretty quiet all night and was replaced near the end.
Looked isolated up top on his own, but when given the chance didn’t take his efforts well enough. Should have scored 10 minutes from the break after being put through on goal, but took his time instead of blasting the ball past De Vries, allowing Elokobi to make a great tackle and clear the danger.
Came on late to help Birmingham keep going until the end.
Came on late to keep his team in the lead.
