    Wojciech Szczesny

Gave Arsenal the odd scare with his kicking but his anticipation and shot-stopping gave his team confidence. Made an outstanding second-half save from Ibrahimovic and smartly thwarted Nocerino, both at 3-0.

  • Bacary Sagna

A rock at right-back. Defended with aplomb and supported Walcott cleverly.

    Thomas Vermaelen

Made up for his first-leg shocker with an astute display as he refused to allow himself to be outsmarted by the power and touch of Ibrahimovic.

  • Laurent Koscielny

    3.50

    Laurent Koscielny

Began Arsena's fightback by stealing a march on Van Bommel to head home Oxlade-Chamberlain's sixth-minute corner. Defended with passion and quick thinking.

  • Kieran Gibbs

    Kieran Gibbs

Made some fine last-ditch tackles but some of his wayward positioning should have been punished.

  • Tomas Rosicky

    Tomas Rosicky

What did Arsenal do with the invisible man of the last three years? Outstanding distribution and imagination for an hour before his legs gave up on him. Precise finish for the second goal.

  • Alex Song

    Alex Song

His energy and presence enabled Arsenal to dominate, particularly in the opening period.

  • Robin van Persie

    Robin van Persie

Slammed home as emphatic a penalty as you could see but this was not a night when Arsenal were reliant on Robin. He fizzed with menace but missed three good chances, including the gaping opportunity with only the keeper to beat at 3-0.

  • Theo Walcott

    Theo Walcott

Not everything he did came off but sent shudders through the Milan defence every time he picked up the ball and began running. Looked Arsenal's most likely source of a goal in the second half until he limped off with seven minutes left.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Top of the Match

The night a superstar was born. His first-half display in central midfield was so polished it was little wonder that he didn't have a can of Mr Sheen in his shorts. Set up the opener with his fizzing corner and brilliantly won the penalty for the third. Faded a little after taking a knock but proved that Arsenal might have a once-in-a-generation player on their hands.

  • Gervinho
    231
    168

    Gervinho

Hardly wasted a run in the first half but faded badly after the break, bar the 58th minute move that should have resulted in van Persie winning the tie.

    Marouane Chamakh

Struggled to get involved after joining Van Persie up front.

  • Christian Abbiati

    3.50

    Christian Abbiati

One of the few shining lights - possibly the only one - for the visitors. Showed great anticipation and reflexes to deny Van Persie on three occasions in open play. Could do little to prevent the three goals.

  • Philippe Mexes
    55
    98
    2.50

    Philippe Mexes

Summed up Milan's first-half complacency and incompetence but also their second-half shrewdness.

  • Ignazio Abate
    59
    96
    2.50

    Ignazio Abate

The right-back struggled to deal with the pace and verve of Arsenal's attacks, although he did make some important interceptions.

  • Thiago Silva
    59
    110
    2.50

    Thiago Silva

Diminished his reputation with a rocky display. Handed Arsenal the second goal with an appalling clearance from Walcott's mis-placed cross.

  • Djamel Mesbah

    Djamel Mesbah

Pitiful whenever Walcott put his foot on the pedal and accelerated towards him. Had the turning speed of a steamboat.

  • Mark van Bommel

    96
    2.50

    Mark van Bommel

The master of the dark arts was comfortably put in the shade by the energy of Arsenal's midfield after receiving an early booking. Failed to properly mark Koscielny for the opener.

  • Antonio Nocerino
    63
    145
    2.00

Antonio Nocerino Flop of the Match

An anonymous figure in central midfield for the first hour although he did become increasingly influential as the game wore on. His incredible failure to finish off a tap-in at 3-0 summed up Milan's incompetence.

  • Urby Emanuelson
    43
    99
    2.50

    Urby Emanuelson

Sloppy distribution and slack in closing down the space for Arsenal to operate in.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    78
    157
    3.00

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Destroyed Arsenal in the first leg but reverted to type against England opposition with a generally tepid display, although he drew an excellent save out of Szczesny at 3-0 and always looked his team's most likely player to kill off the tie.

  • Robinho
    53
    136
    2.00

    Robinho

Slow of action, feet and, seemingly, thought too. Showed once again he has little heart for the away-day battle.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy
    58
    103
    2.50

    Stephan El Shaarawy

Had some bright moments but was generally unconvincing. Put clean through on goal on the brink of half-time but was put off by the onrushing Szczesny and let off Arsenal with a wild finish. Withdrawn after 69 minutes.

Substitutions

  • Alberto Aquilani

    Alberto Aquilani

Instantly revived Milan with his passing range in his comeback from injury. His fine pass into the path of Nocerino should have resulted in a goal.
