Euro 2012 Player Ratings: Sweden 2-3 England

Danny Welbeck won it for the Three Lions as substitute Theo Walcott turned the game on its head

By Kris Voakes in Kiev

  • Andreas Isaksson
    40
    65
    2.00

    Andreas Isaksson

Made a good stop at a stretch to keep out Parker’s early effort, then somehow diverted the ball over from Terry’s header but couldn’t deal with the swerving shot from Walcott through a pack of players from the corner.

  • Olof Mellberg
    90
    14
    3.00

    Olof Mellberg

Allowed Welbeck to get in front of him for a headed chance, then finished nowhere as Carroll rose to head home from Gerrard’s cross. Made up for the error with an exceptional tackle on Welbeck on the edge of the area, then aided a bundled equaliser just after the break and amazingly grabbed a goal of his own from Larsson’s free-kick.

  • Andreas Granqvist
    19
    58
    2.00

Andreas Granqvist Flop of the Match

Immediately looked a step behind the game plan when getting into attacking positions outside of Larsson, and was one of the men to lose Carroll as England took the lead. Substituted by Lustig in the second half.

  • Martin Olsson
    47
    19
    2.50

    Martin Olsson

Did a good job of pinning Milner back at key times in the first half, and he continued to show endeavour after the break. Made one superb run which Kallstrom couldn’t convert.

  • Jonas Olsson
    32
    31
    2.50

    Jonas Olsson

His defending style may have been cultured at best on some occasions, but it seemed to be altogether more solid than Sweden offered on Monday. However, there were occasions when Welbeck found it easy to peel away and send the West Brom man on the run.

  • Rasmus Elm
    15
    39
    2.50

    Rasmus Elm

Held his shape in a disciplined manner down the left without being spectacular, and made some good challenges, but was replaced by Wilhelmsson when Sweden needed a late goal.

  • Sebastian Larsson
    58
    16
    2.50

    Sebastian Larsson

One great delivery was wasted by Ibrahimovic just as against Ukraine, then his clever header from an awkward Kallstrom ball almost sent in Elmander. Sent in a delicious cross which Mellberg headed home to give Sweden the lead. Culpable as Walcott set up Welbeck's winner.

  • Anders Svensson
    17
    34
    2.00

    Anders Svensson

Took his time to really get into the game early on, and was a little slow in reacting when bringing down Young. Couldn’t quite reach a superb Kallstrom pass ahead of Hart as half time approached, and looked jaded at times.

  • Kim Källström
    51
    17
    3.00

    Kim Källström

Sent one delightful ball forward for the advancing Svensson just before half time, then made an excellent tackle on Gerrard but could only give England the ball again straight away. One sumptuous ball for Elm was just cut out by Johnson, but then he side-footed over from Martin Olsson’s pass.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    146
    37
    3.00

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Could have taken a better first touch from Larsson’s superb cross before Johnson stole the ball away, but then tested Hart with a low shot from way out. Often allowed to pick up the ball too easily, he remained a threat on the ball. Forced one great save from Hart.

  • Johan Elmander
    21
    43
    2.50

    Johan Elmander

His thunderous shot from Ibrahimovic’s pass had England fans momentarily nervous, and he led the team in heart when chasing lost causes up front. Eventually ran out of legs and was subbed by Rosenberg.

Substitutions

  • M. Lustig
    10
    35
    2.00

    M. Lustig

Replaced Granqvist just after the hour mark, but couldn't provide any more momentum than his predecessor.

  • Christian Wilhelmsson
    8
    30

    Christian Wilhelmsson

Again introduced late in the day as the Yellow and Blues chased the game.

  • Markus Rosenberg
    7
    32

    Markus Rosenberg

Came on for the tiring Elmander as Sweden needed to grab a goal late on.

  • Joe Hart
    159
    42
    3.00

    Joe Hart

Was as solid as they come until his parry bounced off Johnson and went over the line for a Sweden equaliser. Left standing by Mellberg’s powerful header for the second as the England back line went missing, but made a fine save from Ibrahimovic's shot late on.

  • Glen Johnson
    151
    123
    2.50

    Glen Johnson

Covered superbly to take the ball away from Ibrahimovic after Larsson’s excellent cross, but was then unfortunate to see Hart’s save from Mellberg hit him and find the net. Made another excellent challenge on Elm as he shaped to shoot, but stood and watched Mellberg head a second.

  • Ashley Cole
    121
    87
    2.50

    Ashley Cole

Didn’t seem to have the adventurous instincts that normally come naturally, but defensively he gave Larsson little room in the England half, forcing the better balls to be delivered from deep.

  • John Terry
    119
    107
    2.50

    John Terry

Made a good block to lessen the damage of an Ibrahimovic strike after initially giving the ball away, and was his characteristic self in his commitment and energy for the most part.

  • Joleon Lescott
    101
    84
    2.50

    Joleon Lescott

Started tentatively, with a misjudgement allowing Elmander to win a high ball, then a slack pass putting Cole in trouble. Unable to keep Elmander out of the game, and sometimes found himself dragged out of position.

  • Steven Gerrard
    287
    79
    2.50

    Steven Gerrard

Swung in an excellent cross onto the head of Carroll to see England in front, and did his best to spread play from the centre as the midfield battle was keenly contested.

  • Ashley Young
    90
    176
    2.50

    Ashley Young

Should have done better when opening out his body and only striking into the side-netting, and it was a rare foray into the Sweden box as he failed to get beyond Granqvist too often. His width was often enough to keep the Swedes on their toes, though.

  • James Milner
    67
    205
    2.00

    James Milner

Did a lot of work both on the ball and defensively in the first half, then found his way into the book by ending Martin Olsson’s run. After failing to be truly effective, he was substituted for Walcott to enter the fray.

  • Scott Parker
    167
    67
    3.00

    Scott Parker

Gave away possession with a slack pass early on after a good move, but drilled a shot from distance that had Isaksson stretching to save. Thereafter he was England's heart, ensuring that balls went into the right areas and Sweden were asked plenty of questions.

  • Andy Carroll
    346
    60
    2.50

    Andy Carroll

Rose superbly after shaking off Mellberg to head England in front from Gerrard’s cross. Pulled the defence around a little more after England went behind, helping to gain more space for Welbeck too.

  • Danny Welbeck
    278
    98
    2.50

    Danny Welbeck

Did a good job of peeling off both centre-halves regularly, but may have done better when foiled by Mellberg after breaking through. Won the game with a flick that appeared unintentional.

Substitutions

  • Theo Walcott
    752
    34
    3.50

Theo Walcott Top of the Match

Had an immediate effect when his swerving effort beat everyone in its path and fooled Isaksson to equalise, then got in between Larsson and Jonas Olsson to send in Welbeck for the winner.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    180
    33

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

    Late replacement for matchwinner Welbeck.
