Euro 2012 Player Ratings: Croatia 0-1 Spain

Goal.com rates the players on show as a Jesus Navas goal is enough to see the reigning champions through to the quarter-finals while Slaven Bilic's side crash out

  • Stipe Pletikosa

    Stipe Pletikosa

Not tested often enough by Spain's standards but held all that was thrown at him. Covered his near post to deny Torres and held onto a shot from Ramos in the first half. Saves from Iniesta and Navas late on kept it level.

  • Ivan Strinic
    68

    3.00

    Ivan Strinic

Did not get forward as much as usual which occasionally left Pranjic isolated higher up the pitch. Nevertheless he did a good job of restricting Arbeloa's movements which forced Spain to play narrowly.

  • Vedran Corluka
    67

    3.00

    Vedran Corluka

Put in a very solid display in the heart of defence alongside Schildenfeld. They restricted the space available for the attackers despite their continual movement and remained watertight.

  • Darijo Srna
    71

    3.00

    Darijo Srna

Put in a number of cynical challenges on Jordi Alba and was booked for persistent fouling. Provided an extra man in defence to support Vida and made a fantastic last-ditch challenge on Busquets in the 80th minute.

  • Gordon Schildenfeld

Gordon Schildenfeld Top of the Match

Watched Torres extremely closely and limited his impact in an assured display. He read the game well making key challenges and interceptions to restrict Spain's typically potent attack.

  • Domagoj Vida
    46
    13
    2.50

    Domagoj Vida

Formed a symbiotic relationship with Srna down the right. Reciprocated the assistance in defence by charging forward often to support the captain on Croatia attacks but his delivery was poor.

  • Danijel Pranjic
    56
    8
    3.00

    Danijel Pranjic

Was very energetic as he ran up and down the left side all night. Put in a great shift in terms of work rate but did not see enough of the ball to really trouble the Spanish defence.

  • Ivan Rakitic
    45
    23
    2.50

    Ivan Rakitic

After a shaky start where he gave the ball away twice in the opening minutes he soon regained his composure. Did not make himself available for the ball enough and should have scored with a free header in the second half.

  • Ognjen Vukojevic
    44
    9
    2.50

    Ognjen Vukojevic

Could not get near the ball in the first half as the consistent movement of the Spaniards made it difficult for him. Failed to get forward whenever Croatia managed to win the ball back.

  • Luka Modric
    175
    13
    3.00

    Luka Modric

After an early burst he struggled to influence the game as Spain dominated. Eventually played more of a role and did his best to make the most of the ball on the counterattack. Set up Rakitic who should have scored on the hour mark.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    61
    98
    2.00

Mario Mandzukic Flop of the Match

Hardly saw any of the ball in the first half so could rarely test Pique and Ramos. Spurned one half-chance midway through the first period and claimed a penalty after a good showing of strength but Ramos' tackle was fair.

Substitutions

  • Ivan Perisic
    47
    6
    3.00

    Ivan Perisic

Looked dangerous after entering the match in the 65th minute as he tried to expose behind the full-backs. Pulled a save from Casillas in the 79th minute.

  • Nikica Jelavic
    47
    9
    2.50

    Nikica Jelavic

Joined Mandzukic in attack for the final 25 minutes but saw no more of the ball than the Wolfsburg man.

  • Eduardo
    48
    12

    Eduardo

Brought on in the final 10 minutes and failed to make an impact on the match.

  • Iker Casillas
    136
    38
    3.00

    Iker Casillas

Hardly had a thing to do during the 90 minutes. Forced into a solitary save in the first half from Pranjic but did well to deny Rakitic from close range on the hour-mark.

  • Piqué
    57
    71
    3.00

    Piqué

Was hardly troubled by Mandzukic and dominated the aerial battle at the back. Ventured forward with a speculative effort that flew over in the first half but did not put a foot wrong.

  • Sergio Ramos
    87
    52
    3.00

    Sergio Ramos

Came across to help Alba deal with the powerful Srna. After giving away the ball in the first half he recovered with a well-timed yet crunching challenge. Stayed solid throughout the second half.

  • Arbeloa
    56
    68
    2.50

    Arbeloa

Hugged the right flank for Spain and was somewhat underused by his team. When in possession Strinic and Pranjic did well to double up on him and stop him making an impact.

  • Jordi Alba
    50
    60
    2.50

    Jordi Alba

Pushed forward to help his side control possession in the opposing half but struggled to get in behind Vida. He provided just one cross in the first half which was not enough to influence the game positively.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    122
    78
    3.00

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Was closed down almost instantly by a number of Croatia players. He was guilty of being trying to be too intricate on the ball but an assist in the dying moments atoned for a relatively quiet match.

  • Xavi
    58
    101
    3.00

    Xavi

Made a number of passes but they were all horizontal and piercing vertical passes were well below his usually high average. His distribution was still exemplary throughout however.

  • Xabi Alonso
    77
    67
    3.00

    Xabi Alonso

Kept the game simple in midfield with a variety of passing. Again he failed to offer enough of a threat to the Croatian defence as Spain lacked creativity in the final third.

  • Busquets
    48
    102
    3.00

    Busquets

Mopped up in the middle whenever his side were caught on the ball and looked extremely composed. Did exactly what he is on the pitch to do in a typical performance from the Barcelona man.

  • David Silva
    74
    73
    3.00

    David Silva

Looked the most likely to create something for Spain in the first half with good movement and link-up play but did not make the most of his 29th minute effort. Went quiet in the second half and was subsequently substituted.

  • Fernando Torres
    151
    88
    2.00

    Fernando Torres

Made a real nuisance of himself in the early stages but was tracked frequently by Schildenfeld. Did well to forge his own chance from an acute angle in the 22nd minute but his lack of involvement saw him substituted in the 61st minute.

Substitutions

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    118
    74
    3.00

    Cesc Fàbregas

Introduced in the 73rd minute and should well have scored five minutes later but he hestiated when he should have got a shot away inside the area. His exquisite lobbed pass created the winner for his side.

  • Jesús Navas González
    135
    70
    3.50

    Jesús Navas González

Instantly added pace down the right and looked extremely threatening. After seeing a shot saved by Pletikosa he was the man to make the difference with a tap in in the 88th minute.

  • Negredo
    49
    65

    Negredo

Brought on in the final minute of normal time and failed to make an impact.
