Live Commentary

  • That's it for our live coverage this evening. Thank you for reading, and be sure to check out's live coverage of the remaining League Cup quarter-finals tomorrow.
  • A final word from our chief correspondent Wayne Veysey, who has been at Stamford Bridge tonight: "There was a hug for all of Liverpool's players from delighted Dalglish as they made their way off the pitch following an outstanding team performance and fully deserved entry into the Carling Cup semi-finals. The fans who crammed into the away end got full value for their trip to London for the second time in 10 days, a remarkable achievement given the tough assignment against Man City only 48 hours previously. As for Chelsea, their diamond midfield were clueless and completely dominated."
  • 90' + 5'
Full time at Stamford Bridge. A fantastic performance from Craig Bellamy to set up goals for Maxi and Kelly sees Kenny Dalglish’s men enter their 14th League Cup semi-final. A poor result for the Blues, who never really threatened the away side’s goal. Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool.
  • 90' + 3'
Another half chance for Chelsea, but Fernando Torres is deemed to be offside once again.
  • 90'
Kenny Dalglish just running the clock down now, as Maxi, who has scored twice at Stamford Bridge in under two weeks, leaves the field to warm applause from the away section.
  • 89'
    SubstitutionMaxi Rodríguez Martin Skrtel
  • 88'
Liverpool seem happy to sit back and let Chelsea enjoy possession around the half-way line. Ramires tries to thread a through ball to the largely quiet Torres, who makes an intelligent run but is given offside.
  • 84'
The hosts win a free-kick around thirty yards from goal. Alex steps up and attempts a trademark piledriver but can only find row z.
  • 82'
Here's what Wayne, our man at Stamford Bridge, has to say: "A huge hand for the substituted Bellamy from the Liverpool fans following a menacing, match-winning display. The away fans sing 'One Gary Speed' in a timely tribute to the effect of the man on Bellamy's career."
  • 81'
The Blues are pushing hard to reduce the deficit. They enjoy a period of possession before Romeu finds Lampard with a cutting through ball. But Chelsea's top scorer fails to get the ball under control.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionCraig Bellamy Dirk Kuyt
  • 78'
Torres wins a corner off Maxi. Mata whips in a ball which grazes Alex's head, but the Brazilian cannot connect with the header.
  • 76'
Another chance falls to Chelsea, this time Torres can only manage to header straight at Reina. As Liverpool break it is clear that they are not stopping here, as Henderson sprints down the wing but can't find Carroll with his cross.
  • 74'
A possible match-defining chance for the hosts, as Anelka races away from the Liverpool defence. He nutmegs Reina before the visitors' defence crowds him out and clears.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionLucas Leiva Charlie Adam
  • 72'
A worrying sight for Dalglish, as Lucas is stretchered off the field. The tenacious midfielder seems to be in some pain here.
  • 70'
Substitute Anelka looks to create something for the hosts, managing to cross past the outstretched leg of Kelly. Mata brings it down neatly and lays it to Ramires who tries to feed Anelka again but Maxi intercepts.
  • 68'
Here's what Wayne, our man live at the Bridge, has to say: "Kenny told them not to bother coming but the Liverpool fans who have filled the away end will be glad they did. They are in excellent voice after watching their team deservedly go 2-0 up courtesy of brilliantly weighted crosses to Maxi and then Kelly."
  • 67'
Another free-kick for Liverpool. This time Bellamy decides to go for goal from distance but Turnbull gathers with ease.
  • 66'
    Yellow Card Ramires
  • 64'
    SubstitutionR. Lukaku Juan Mata
  • 64'
    Goal Martin Kelly
Goal!!! And it's 2-0 at Stamford Bridge! Craig Bellamy whips in a delightful ball for Martin Kelly to nod home his first goal for the club. The Blues have their work cut out now.
  • 63'
    SubstitutionFlorent Malouda Nicolas Anelka
  • 62'
It's all Liverpool since the goal. They're passing the ball around midfield comfortably and the hosts can't get near it. Everytime they get a foot in there is a red shirt waiting.
  • 59'
    Goal Maxi Rodríguez
GOAAAAL!!! It's against the run of play, but it goes Liverpool's way! Bertrand steps up allowing Bellamy yards of space behind him. The Welshman squares to Maxi who taps it into an open goal from two yards out.
  • 55'
So nearly for the home side. Lampard swings in a free kick which is turned onto the bar, before Luiz has a diving header yards from goal deflected for a corner.
  • 54'
    Yellow Card Sebastián Coates
  • 53'
And the resulting clearance leads to a Liverpool counter. Bellamy races into Chelsea's half and tries to thread the ball through for Maxi but Turnbull manages to gather.
  • 52'
For the first time in the match, the hosts are putting concerted pressure on the away side's goal. Torres takes on Kelly and the ball nearly falls for Lukaku but Liverpool clear.
  • 49'
The first half-chance of the second period comes, as Romeu finds space thirty yards from goal. He attempts to shoot but the ball is deflected out for a goalkick off Lampard.
  • 47'
And the second half starts in the same way as much of the first did, with Chelsea cheaply giving away possession, this time with a loose ball from Romeu, and Liverpool trying to build from the back.
  • 46'
Chelsea get the second half underway.
  • Wayne, our guy at Stamford Bridge, offers his half-time thoughts: "Appreciative applause, particularly from the Liverpool fans, at the end of an enthralling opening period. Liverpool have retained the ball well and been the more constructive of the two teams, an excellent display given that 48 hours previously they hosted Manchester City at Anfield. It has been a tale of three penalties, two waved away by referee Dowd and one given, a blatant handball by Alex. Carroll wasted the golden opportunity, drilling it straight at Turnbull."
  • 45' + 3'
Half time at Stamford Bridge. It's been a tight affair in west London, with neither side managing to dominate possession. Liverpool seem to have the edge at the moment, but Chelsea are showing momentary glimpses of magic so the visitors will want to get a goal to feel comfortable. This game is still wide open!
  • 45' + 1'
Best chance of the match for the hosts, as Bosingwa whips in an early cross from the right wing. Lukaku gets up well but can only direct his header wide of Reina's goal.
  • 44'
    Yellow Card Ryan Bertrand
  • 44'
Three Chelsea players challenge Henderson at once. Lukaku catches the Liverpool man but Bertrand is booked by the referee.
  • 43'
Bertrand shows Ashley Cole-like ability, racing forwards from left-back. He dummies the ball in the area for Lampard but the veteran midfielder gets the ball caught up in his feet.
  • 41'
    SubstitutionJosh McEachran Ramires
  • 41'
The Reds continue to try and outnumber Chelsea down the left flank, with Bellamy and Maxi doubling up. This time Enrique runs with the ball before cutting inside and shooting straight into the arms of Turnbull.
  • 38'
Bellamy switches the ball to the right flank trying to find Kelly. Bertrand does fantastically to get there and block the pass before bombing down the left flank. The young full-back then fails to control Romeu's pass.
  • 36'
Chelsea starting to look a little stronger going forwards as the half wears on. They have a decent spell of passing before Romeu misplaces a pass. It's a Liverpool goalkick.
  • 35'
Our man at Stamford Bridge tonight is Wayne Veysey: “A word on the rousing minute's applause for Gary Speed, who united both sets of supporters shortly before kick-off with chants of 'One Gary Speedo'. It was too much for Bellamy and Lampard, who both had to wipe away the tears before the whistle blew. The emotion demonstrated what a popular and much-loved figure Speed was.”
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Florent Malouda
  • 29'
Henderson runs into Malouda on the half-way line and is dispossessed. Malouda gets down the left wing and wins a corner for his side
  • 26'
Lampard gets acres of space on the edge of the visitors' area, but Kelly does just enough to see him get underneath his shot and smash it high over the crossbar.
  • 25'
Torres cannot seem to get into the game for Chelsea. The ball is played into him on the edge of the box but he can't control it and Liverpool clear.
  • 23'
    Penalty save Ross Turnbull
  • 23'
    Missed Penalty Andy Carroll
  • 22'
    Yellow Card Alex
  • 22'
SAVED!!! Carroll hits it straight down the middle and stand-in stopper Ross Turnbull makes the save!
  • 20'
PENALTY! Enrique plays the ball in to Carroll and it catches Alex on the arm. Phil Dowd consulted with the linesman before giving the spot kick.
  • 18'
The away side begin to dominate possession in the midfield again but can't make it count, as an attempted long ball into Andy Carroll finds the ex-Newcastle man offside.
  • 15'
Andre Villas Boas' men are seeing a little bit more of possession than in the early stages, but don't seem to be too comfortable on the ball. Eventually McEachran finds space for a shot but Carragher makes the block.
  • 12'
Kelly does well to win a corner off Bertrand down the right hand side. The set piece leads to a half-chance for Carroll who smashes it wide.
  • 10'
Henderson catches Bertrand in possession next to the home side's corner flag but cannot find a Liverpool player with the cross. The visitors are beginning to dominate possession in the midfield.
  • 7'
Liverpool hold onto the ball for a while on the left wing before managing to squeeze a cross in. Andy Carroll goes to ground under the challenge of Bosingwa but nobody else appeals.
  • 5'
Early penalty shout as David Luiz goes down from a Coates challenge. However replays suggest that the tackle was fair. Lively start from the home side.
  • 4'
    Yellow Card David Luiz
  • 1'
The referee blows to begin the match
