Valencia and Cadiz played out a lacklustre 0-0 draw at Ramon de Carranza on Tuesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey Round of 32 contest.

In a game with little attacking action, Unai Emery's men were trying to bounce back from Champions League elimination and a horrific 2-1 loss to Real Betis at the weekend, but failed to produce much of anything with the ball.

The visitors had a couple of decent first-half chances, with Aritz Aduriz nearly firing home from inside the box 20 minutes in, but the former Mallorca forward couldn't put the ball on target.

Clearances and wayward passing in the middle of the pitch were symptomatic of a poor first half, and although the second division side were forced to defend for most of the game, they were able to enter the break just as they had started, on level terms.

Just two minutes into the second period, Pablo Piatti sped into the box after breezing past a defender, and his shot towards the right post appeared to be heading in, but flew just wide.

Cadiz then enjoyed their best spell of the match, putting Valencia in an uncomfortable defensive position, but the couldn't manage to test Vicente Guaita as much than they would have liked, resorting to one effort on the right by David Ferreiro that had little chance of beating the goalkeeper.

With 30 minutes to go, Unai Emery opted to bring on star striker Roberto Soldado for the ineffectual Jonas. The former Real Madrid striker has 14 goals in all competitions this season, but has only found the net once away from the Mestalla, and didn't look like adding to his tally here.

Each team went in search of a crucial goal but a lack of creativity saw the remaining minutes run down as Cadiz earned a much-deserved draw.

The trouble for Valencia continues, though, with yet another uninspiring showing, and they will look to improve in the second leg, played on December 22 at Mestalla.
