Crystal Palace have progressed to the third round of the League Cup following a 2-1 home win over Premier League side Wigan Athletic.

The result will undoubtedly act as a confidence boost for the victors, but Wigan, who had a relatively strong side out will be disappointed, although this defeat allows the Latics to concentrate on retaining their Premier League status.

Darren Ambrose came close inside the first quarter of an hour as he forced Wigan custodian Ali Al-Habsi into an impressive low save from a free-kick, however the former Charlton man wasn’t to be denied next time.

Wilfried Zaha did well down the left-wing before playing a clever ball back towards Ambrose who arrived late in penalty area and duly applied the finish.

Palace soon doubled their advantage with Jon Williams controlling the ball well in the penalty area and striking past Al-Habsi after the Wigan defence made a mess of clearing Zaha’s right-wing cross.

As the match got closer to the full-time whistle, Wigan became more lively, going close through a powerful drive from Patrick van Aanholt and a Shaun Maloney header.

However, it was Ben Watson who gave the visitors a lifeline as the former Palace midfielder smashed home a shot from 25 yards following Lewis Price’s punch clear, but the Premier League side were unable to capitalise on their goal and the home side went through.
