Udinese 1-1 Celtic: Antonio Di Natale strike cancels out Gary Hooper opener as travelling Scots fail to progress

Celtic have dropped out of the Europa League after failing to beat Udinese and ending their final group game of the tournament with a 1-1 draw.
Nothing but a win for the Hoops would have seen them progress to the knockout stages, but an equally determined Udinese side matched their visitors to send themselves through to the last 32 of the competition, with the Scottish side once more tasting European dismay.
Just two changes from Neil Lennon’s outfit saw Scott Brown return to captain the side, as well as Ki Sung-Young making his way back into the midfield line-up.
Celtic began the game in good spirits and could have been one goal up if Hooper had converted a chance from the angle, but the striker made up by putting the visitors ahead with a tap-in. However, the lead couldn’t be prolonged as far as the break, with Antonio Di Natale taking advantage of slack defending from close-range.
Great reactions from Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster denied Udinese taking the lead themselves in the second-half, with a great double save, stopping both Di Natale and Mauricio Isla in a matter of moments. Another flurry of saves saw it stay even, but even a late fightback from the hosts couldn't see a winner for the Hoops.
After an opening 10 minutes lacking of goalmouth action and a very soft booking for Celtic forward Hooper, the hosts found themselves with a great opportunity to open the scoring, as Di Natale attempted an audacious lob over ‘keeper Fraser Forster, with the Italian’s effort bouncing just wide

Celtic could have been in the lead with an even more clear-cut chance from Hooper, with the forward put through into the Udinese area by strike partner Georgios Samaras, but the former Scunthorpe United man could only place his shot past the wrong side of the far post.
However, Hooper took advantage of slack defending from the hosts to make up for his miss and put the visitors ahead. Samaras again the architect, this time down the left-side, the Greek forward raced into the box to put in a low ball that was saved initially by ‘keeper Samir Handanovic, but a defensive mishap left Hooper with an easy tap-in to take the lead.
The Hoops looked to be heading into the break with their one goal advantage intact, but the hosts had other plans, with key man Di Natale getting on the end of a poorly-dealt-with cross into the Celtic area and punishing the visitors for their lack of intent to clear the ball to safety.
After half-time a scrappy second period ensued, with each side denying the other with stubborn defending.
Forster was made the hero of the half, after Udinese powering forward on numerous occasions to try and secure their qualification.
One such moment of heroics coming just after the hour mark, with Di Natale whipping in a shot to force a diving save from the Englishman, who immediately rose to his feet to deny the hosts for a second time, punching away substitute Isla’s dangerous header.
The woodwork came into play to deny the Italian side’s next opportunity, after Di Natale’s low cross was latched onto by Kwadwo Asamoah, but the midfielder’s touch could only put the ball onto the post and past the by-line.
A moment of ill fortune was quickly turned into instinct to keep Udinese on course for qualification as Handanovic was faced with a blasted effort outside of the box from Cha Du-Ri that cannoned off the post and onto the ‘keepers back, directing the ball toward goal. Only the Slovenian’s reactions stopping the ball before it crossed the line before it could give Celtic the lead again.
Di Natale was handed another great chance to put the game beyond Celtic after going through on goal against Forster, but the ‘keeper reacted well to the Italian’s arched shot and the cross from the rebound could only be headed into the path of the shot-stopper by the striker.
Celtic pushed for a winner in the dying embers of the game, but couldn’t find a way through and join Fulham, Tottenham and Birmingham in the list of British clubs not to make it into Friday’s pot for the last 32.
