Two goals from Anthony Stokes helped ease the pressure on manager Neil Lennon as Celtic claimed a vital 3-1 win against Rennes in the Europa League.
The home side went behind after just three minutes of the match, but Stokes struck twice in the first half to put the Bhoys in front before Gary Hooper made safe the points eight minutes from the end.
Yann M’Vila was sent off for a second bookable offence late on for the visitors, who endured a frustrating night at Celtic Park as they held the lion’s share of possession and chances but all to no avail.
The victory will come as welcome relief to all at Celtic Park, as Neil Lennon’s side put their recent poor form to bed with some clinical finishing and stoic defensive work against a technically strong Rennes team who took the lead through a Mangane header inside three minutes.
The home side drew level on the half-hour mark as Stokes turned in the rebound from a James Forrest effort.
The former Arsenal and Sunderland striker then put his side in front, as Stokes slotted home with a cool finish after a route-one ball from goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
The visitors applied the pressure in the second half, but the Bhoys held firm against the French attack and made the points secure with eight minutes to go when Hooper fired home after some neat play with Samaras.
The result moves Celtic above the French side in the group, and puts them within touching distance of Atletico Madrid and Udinese at the top.
While Neil Lennon’s side will be up against it in their final two fixtures against the group leaders, they know that progression to the next round is now within their hands.
