Rennes 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Late Juanfran equaliser snatches point for Spanish side
The 2010 Europa League winners left it late to avoid defeat in France, but were able to salvage a share of the spoils to keep them at the top of Group I
Atletico Madrid had to rely on an 87th minute equaliser from Juanfran to clinch a 1-1 draw versus Rennes in their Europa League Group I clash in France.
A second-half strike from Victor Montano clipped the body of Alvaro Dominguez and flew into the net to give the hosts the lead, but Juanfran's late volley grabbed a point for the Spanish and frustrated the hosts.
The visiting Spanish outfit fielded a strong starting XI, with South American attacking duo Radamel Falcao and Diego both present in the team.
But the opening spell of the match was broken up by petty fouls that meant the flow of play was often interrupted and both goalkeepers were rarely called into action.
The second half saw the intensity of the contest increase with both Dalmat and Montano going close for the hosts, and they were eventually rewarded when they took a deserved lead on 56 minutes, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.
Dalmat laid the ball to Montano fully 30 yards out, but his powerful effort wickedly spun off of Dominguez and looped into the net.
Atletico were far from at their best, perhaps still feeling the effects of their 5-0 humbling at the hands of Barcelona at the weekend, and their recent fluid attacking play was far from evident.
Falcao, who has begun his career at the Vicente Calderon in impressive style, squandered his best opportunity by drilling wide of the target as Atleti rallied but the elusive equaliser eventually arrived with just three minutes remaining.
Juanfran, who only arrived as a late substitute for Arda Turan, latched onto an Eduardo Salvio delivery into the area to crash his volley into the net and frustrate the hosts.
The points were shared, and with Udinese drawing 1-1 at Celtic in the group's other contest, Atletico stay top, with Rennes three points back in third.
