Paris Saint-Germain squandered a succession of chances before surviving the second-half dismissal of two players to claim a 0-0 draw with Slovan Bratislava in their Europa League clash at the Pasienky Stadium on Thursday night.
PSG dominated the opening period but could find no way past Lukas Hrosso in the home side’s goal and their hopes of victory were all but dashed when Clement Chantome and Siaka Tiene were both sent off for second bookable offences.
Bratislava actually started the brighter of the two, forcing a couple of early corners, but they only threatened sporadically thereafter as the expensively-assembled visiting side quickly took command of the contest, with summer signings Jeremy Menez and Javier Pastore very much to the fore.
Mevlut Erding then wasted the best opening of the half in the 25th minute after being put through by Nene, the Turk failing to get enough elevation on his shot as he attempted to dink the ball over the advancing Lukas Hrosso.
However, the worst example of PSG’s profligacy came just two minutes into the second half when Hrosso spilled Zoumana Camara’s header at the feet of Erding but he shot straight at the Bratislava keeper before Diego Lugano somehow contrived to stab the ball wide.
Menez continued to threaten for PSG, drawing a decent save out of Hrosso with a well-struck show from outside the box, but the complexion of the game changed on 63 minutes when midfielder Chantome, having already been booked for a tackle from behind, collected his second yellow after catching Erik Grendel late.
Antoine Kombouare responded to the dismissal by whipping off Erdinc and replacing him with a defender, Ceara, but the PSG boss had few options available to him when defender Tiene was also sent packing 10 minutes before the end for picking up two yellows in the space of eight minutes.
Remarkably, PSG held on quite comfortably with nine men and could even have nicked all three points late on but Hrosso pushed Nene’s low strike around the post.
The result means that the French outfit remain second in Group F, three points behind leaders Athletic Bilbao, who were held at home by Salzburg.
