Athletic Bilbao 2-0 Paris Saint-Germain: Gabilondo & Susaeta secure first win of season for Marcelo Bielsa's men
Bilbao eased to victory in this Europa League match after fine first-half goals from Igor Gabilondo and Susaeta were enough to see off a hugely disappointing 10-man PSG

Spain’s oldest stadium, San Mames, played host to a wonderful performance from Athletic Bilbao as they emerged 2-0 victors over PSG in this Europa League Group F game.
PSG decided to rest the likes of Jeremy Menez and top-scorer Kevin Gameiro and were made to pay for their complacency by Igor Gabilondo and Susaeta’s first-half goals.
Bilbao dominated from start to finish going ahead after 20 minutes, through a goal of the highest quality courtesy of their left winger Igor Gabilondo. De Marcos was the provider, finding space down the right to lift a ball to the back post where the stretching Gabilondo showed marvellous technique to finish with aplomb with a fine left-footed volley.
Despite struggling in La Liga this season Bilbao made a mockery of PSG’s riches with some wonderful play in the opening 45 minutes. However for all their attacking success the Basque side were somewhat fortuitous to finish the half with 11 players after their keeper Iraizoz was lucky to only receive a yellow after handling outside the area.
Bilbao were carving the PSG defence apart as the first half reached a conclusion, with Muniain, Gabilondo and Llorente combining brilliantly at times. PSG’s makeshift central defensive partnership of Lugano and Armand had no answer to the pace and movement of Bilbao’s attacking players.
Bilbao’s constant pressure was finally converted into a second goal, right on the stroke of half-time. The hugely impressive Susaeta was on hand to sweep home at the back post after a fabulous deep cross from the overlapping Jon Aurtenexte Borde down the left.
Momo Sissoko was shown a second yellow card on 52 minutes after a rash challenge from behind on the mercurial Muniain right under the nose of the referee further compounding his side’s miserable performance.
Muniain was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet mid-way through the second half after controlling the ball superbly inside the PSG box. His finish failed to match his control, however, and his weak effort was gathered comfortably by Nicoulas Douchez.
PSG struggled to get any real foothold in the game, particularly after Sissoko's sending off and the final scoreline of 2-0 flattered the visitors, who were abject for large periods of the game.
This evening's win means that Bilbao go into the third round of Europa League matches with a three point lead in Group F and their manager Marco Bielsa will now hope he can replicate the quality of tonight's performance in La Liga. PSG on the other hand will look forward to getting back to Ligue 1 where they are enjoying far more success than they did against a rampant Bilbao side this evening.
