Potters miss out on top spot in Europa League Group E after defeat in Turkey as Upson sees red and goals from Fernandes, Pektemek and Edu seal win for the hosts
By Simon Sinclair
Made a good save to deny Jerome as he narrowed the angle in a one-on-one situation, but could do nothing with Fuller’s deflected goal. Read the game well throughout.
Was solid defensively and often tried to raid forward from left-back. Crossed the ball well and tried to set up attacks whenever he could. Rarely tested in defence.
Played Jerome onside for his one-on-one opportunity. Had a good game for the most part but was unchallenged for the majority. Good in the air from set-pieces.
Unlucky to deflect Fuller’s effort out of the path of Recber. Recovered well moments later to deny Fuller a tap in from close range after a poor back-pass to Recber. Solid work.
Ran the game for Besiktas from the midfield in an outstanding performance. Used the ball extremely well and provided his team-mates with great chances to score on a regular basis. Had a few good efforts himself which were saved by Begovic. Well taken penalty.
Proved to be a handful for the Stoke defence with his skill and movement around the box. Tested Begovic with looping effort early in the game but this was an inconsistent performance as he was constantly in and out of the game.
Raided forward whenever he could to support Holosko down the right. Defending was decent but he was in truth rarely troubled by Jerome who was unwilling to attack out wide.
Didn't have the best of the games and was overshadowed in the midfield by Fernandes. Stuck to his task against a physical Stoke side.
Unlucky to see good effort saved by Begovic after intelligently beating his man before shooting. Showed a good range of passing to try and shift the Stoke defence out of position. Faded in the second half.
Had decent effort at goal saved by Begovic. Troubled the Stoke defence with movement as he peeled off Upson to win penalty for his side. Always a threat from distance with powerful long shots.
Had a couple of decent chances in the first half but converted neither of them. Put good crosses from the right into the box which occasionally troubled the Stoke defence before being replaced at half-time.
Tried to get involved in the game after coming on late as a sub and used the ball well to avoid wasting possession in his time on pitch.
Had Begovic troubled with a good effort minutes after arriving from the bench. Always wanted the ball down the right and used skill to beat his man. Great header to give his side the lead.
Maintained Besiktas’ tempo late on and scored an excellent goal from outside the box with a powerful left-footed shot. Showed good movement as he punished Stoke’s jaded players.
Kept Stoke in the game with a string of fantastic saves from Fernandes, Ernst and Almeida. Could do nothing to stop good penalty from Fernandes and efforts from Edu and Pektemek, however. His efforts, along with solid handling and kicking, meant he did not perhaps deserve to be on the losing side.
Showed his versatility by switching to centre-half from left-back after Upson was sent off. Defended well in the air and showed good positional sense to quell some of Besiktas’ attacking play.
Gave Stoke an experienced head at the back and showed composure and positional skills until he fouled Almeida early in the second half and gave away a penalty. Saw himself red carded for the challenge.
Left the field in the first half with an apparent injury, struggled slightly in a wing-back position as he was caught out by balls over the top.
Had a good game in defence for his first start at the back this season. Used the ball well and didn’t just try to play long balls up-field. Tackling was good in defence and he read the game well.
Looked lost while playing in defence. Didn’t seem to know his whereabouts and which players' runs to track. Allowed too many crosses into the box and Should have marked Pektemek from a corner to stop him getting Besiktas’ second goal.
Tracked back well and put himself about in the midfield. Tried to get Stoke going forward whenever he had the ball, which didn’t occur too often, but stuck to his task.
Used the ball well in midfield when he got the opportunity. Tackled well in the heart of midfield and tried to protect the back four from advancing Beskitas midfielders which wasn’t an easy task. Faded late on in the game.
Put a perfectly timed and weighted ball through to Jerome which deserved a better end result than it got. Played in a deeper role but didn’t look out of place winning plenty of headers from the midfield.
Was a threat to Besiktas and showed that by getting on the scoresheet although he was aided by a deflection which wrong-footed Recber. Nearly added a second after bravely challenging the Besiktas stopper with the ball almost landing in the net.
Missed a good opportunity early on after being put through one-on-one with Recber. Helped his team by tracking back and doing his defensive duties especially after Upson’s sending off.
Was restricted in his role going forward but was tidy in possession. Didn’t really get a chance to show his creative flair but his set-pieces were poor.
