Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Stoke City: Late Vukojevic strike denies Potters vital win after Cameron Jerome opens account

After defending so gallantly, the away side are denied three points by a stoppage time effort, but still come away with an impressive point in a hard-fought game

Stoke City earned an impressive 1-1 draw away at Dynamo Kiev, but will have come away from the game feeling they deserved more after conceding in second-half stoppage time after defending so brilliantly throughout.

The game started cagily as both sides looked to find their feet, with Stoke’s keeper Sorenson dealing with an early cross from Goran Popov from the left comfortably following a free-kick given away by Salif Diao. Without the long throws of Rory Delap, responsibility in this area fell to Ryan Shotton, but he also found his early attempt dealt well with by Kiev’s goalkeeper and captain Oleksandr Shovkovskiy.

The first clear-cut chances fell to Kiev in the opening minutes as Yarmolenko then Garmash had efforts from outside the penalty area go wide of Sorenson’s goal. Dynamo’s star striker Andriy Shevchenko also gave a good indication of his talent in the seventh minute with some wonderful control in the penalty area after a cross-field ball from Yarmolenko.

Kiev appeared to settle the quicker of the two sides, with a driven cross from the left by Popov forcing a corner, but Stoke were able shepherd any attacking threat away from their penalty area. However, Diao found himself in trouble with the referee early after persistent fouling, and was given a yellow card in only the 15th minute.

Stoke were struggling to keep possession in the opening twenty minutes, and found their defence dropping deeper and deeper, so it was no surprise when Kiev were able to forge their first genuine chance. After some good work on the right by Danilo Silva, Popov had a fizzing shot parried by Stoke’s goalkeeper Sorenson. On the rebound was Yarmalenko from six yards out, but he skewed his shot tamely wide when he seemed certain to score.

After this scare at the back, Stoke seemed to grow into the game, with Shotton shooting wide in the 21st minute after a corner. However, Popov was still finding plenty of space on Kiev’s left despite the attentions of Shotton, but his crosses were largely ineffective and dealt with by Stoke’s defence, particularly the impressive Wilkinson.

However, Stoke’s strong tackles were causing them problems with the referee, as they gave away some clumsy free kicks. Kenwyne Jones and debutant Cameron Jerome tried to use their strength up front, but were struggling against a well-drilled Kiev defence, particularly Betao in the centre.

Kiev found themselves another opening in the 34th minute after a cross from Silva found its way to Artem Milevskiy. He shot straight at Sorenson from just inside the penalty area, and while the goalkeeper spilled it initially, he gathered the ball on the second attempt. Ryan Shawcross then gave away a free-kick in the 39th minute after a poorly timed tackle, earning himself a yellow card.

Stoke continued to give away careless free-kicks, though, with Matthew Upson earning a yellow card in the 41st minute and Robert Huth doing likewise in the 43rd minute for fouls near the halfway line. The first half ended at 0-0, with Stoke looking largely comfortable despite some difficult moments from the Kiev attackers.

After Kiev brought on Haruna for Denys Garmash at half-time, Stoke began the second half brightly, with Jerome forcing an early corner. Milevskiy was then booked in the 47th minute for a clumsy tackle, but both teams found themselves struggling to keep possession.

The first real opening fell to the away side, as after some good strength shown by Jones, Shotton was able to move down the right. His cross found its way to Jerome, who finished coolly into the roof of the net for his first goal in European football on his Stoke debut.

This seemed to frustrate certain Kiev players even more, and Goran Popov was booked for a shoulder-charge on goalscorer Jerome in the 56th minute. However, Kiev almost found a response to Jerome’s goal in the 59th minute, as Shevchenko had a free header after a cross from Popov, but he could only find Sorenson in Stoke’s goal.

Kiev found themselves unable to hold onto the ball, but second-half substitute Aliev had a long-range shot tipped for a corner by goalkeeper Sorenson. From the resulting corner, there was some confusion in the Stoke defence after a good delivery by Aliev, but the danger was averted.

Stoke had a good chance after a through ball by debutant Wilson Palacios and some good strength by Kenwyne Jones, then Shevchenko saw a volleyed effort from a lofted ball go sailing over the bar, before a chance for Milevskiy in the 72nd minute was blocked by several Stoke defenders and Aliev saw a long-range effort saved comfortably by Sorenson.

The Potters seemed to be in little danger in the second half until the 76th minute when the lively Aliev saw another long-range effort cannon off the crossbar, adding to any Stoke nerves. Kiev’s pressure on the Stoke goal was beginning to be increased, but the away side nearly went 2-0 up after a good counter-attack from Jones, but his shot was blocked by Yussuf.

Kiev then promptly went up to Stoke’s penalty area and saw Shevchenko flash a ball across through the penalty area where it was not picked up by any home players when he could have shot himself.

Stoke then retreated behind the ball, with Dean Whitehad brought on in place of Shotton to provide some much-needed experience. However, Kiev failed to create many clear-cut chances, with Brown heading straight to Sorenson in the 88th minute and Aliev shooting just wide from distance again.

As the game went into stoppage time, Kiev’s pressure finally told as Vukojevic forced home from Yarmalenko’s cross and equalised for the Ukrainians. It was disappointing for Stoke, and could have been worse as Kiev had a late free-kick go straight into the wall.

The final whistle blew, and it was almost the perfect European debut for Stoke City, but they could be happy with their evening’s work in difficult surroundings against one of the better eastern European teams in the Europa League.
