A quickfire double from Lopes Wesley almost gave Romanian minnows and unlikely victory away against a 10-man Lazio side, who needed a Giuseppe Sculli equaliser to rescue a point.

From the outset, it seemed Lazio were determined to get their Europa League campaign underway with a victory. Djibril Cisse forced an early save from Cerniauskas as the Frenchman looked to test his opponent from distance, before the former Liverpool man turned provider, setting up Tommaso Rocchi, who was denied by a fantastic reaction save from Cerniauskas.

Alvaro Gonzalez sent a half-volley into the side netting from the edge of the box as Lazio pushed for the breakthrough.

The deadlock was inevitably broken as the half wore on as Ionut Balatar gifted Lazio a penalty with a rash challenge, and Cisse made no mistake from the spot to give his side the lead.

After the break, the hosts continued their push. Cisse sent an effort narrowly wide straight from the kick-off, before Gonzalez sent a header straight into Cerniauskas’ arms following Matuzalem’s cross.

Then, just before the hour mark, the Romanians equalised against the run of play. Adailton swung in a free-kick, and Vaslui skipper Wesley headed past a stunned Marchetti.

Things went from bad to worse after Luciano Zauri received his marching orders for bundling over Mike Tamwanyera, and Wesley made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick.

The Romanian side dug their heels in to protect their slender advantage, but it was to no avail. The ten-man hosts equalised as Cisse swung in a cross from the right, and Sculli rose highest at the far post, squeezing his header pas Cerniauskas.

Libor Kozak struck the bar following poor handling from Cerniauskas as the hosts pushed for a winner, but in the end both sides had to settle for a point.
