Lyon staged a memorable comeback at Stadion Maksimir in Group D of the Champions League, as they produced a stunning second half performance to defeat Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 and overturn a huge goal difference deficit that sent Ajax out of the competition.
Dinamo were reduced to 10 men early on but took the lead in the 40th minute. Lyon equalised in on the stroke of half time and were rampant in the second period as they scored another six goals to secure their place in the last 16 in astonishing circumstances.
The match started tentatively, with some intricate passes from the visitors ending with Yoann Gourcuff slipping a neat ball through to Jimmy Briand. He beat Ivan Kelava to the ball, dinking it over the keeper but just shaved the far post.
Lyon’s qualification chances then received a huge boost when makeshift centre-back Jerko Leko received his second yellow card for a tug on Bafetimbi Gomis with half an hour played.
However, with five minutes to go before the break, Dinamo took the lead. Beqiraj drove between Bakary Kone and Aly Cissokho but was foiled twice with a double-save from Lloris. However, 17-year-old Mateo Kovacic smashed in the rebound to make Lyon’s night even more difficult.
Theat goal shocked the visitors into life and they finally showed the urgency that they needed from the off as they forced Dinamo to defend relentlessly. The equaliser came on the stroke of half-time when Cissokho’s cross received a looping deflection off of Sime Vrsaljko and Gomis slid in to make sure of the goal.
Remi Garde clearly gave the perfect team talk as Lyon emerged for the second half with renewed vigour, scoring three times in seven minutes. The first came within two minutes of the restart when Gourcuff’s corner was flicked on by Briand. Maxime Gonalons went to control the ball but he fortuitously turned it into the roof of the net.
Then, seconds later, Briand won the ball from the last man and squared to Gomis who beat Kelava convincingly, firing into the roof of the net.
Gomis then completed a dramatic hat-trick when he tapped into an open goal from Cissokho’s perfectly weighted delivery with just seven second half minutes played, and the French outfit did not stop there.
Lisandro Lopez was brought on to add to the goals and he had the desired impact. The Argentine beat the offside trap and slotted the ball home comfortably in the 65th minute.
Lyon’s confidence grew exponentially with every strike and with 20 minutes left on the clock Gomis added his fourth. Cissokho provided the assist once more as the striker opened his body up and angled the ball into the top corner.
Lopez then turned provider when his dummy sent Briand through on goal. The French international’s first touch teed up his shot perfectly and he bent it in to the net past with 76 minutes on the clock.
As Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 victory against Ajax in the group's other game Lyon successfully completed a nine-goal swing that saw them through to the last 16 in second place, at the expense of the dutch giants.
