Player Ratings: Basel 2-1 Manchester United

Showed good anticipation to intercept crosses into his penalty area and his distribution was neat and tidy. Made great save at the feet of Nani in the 36th minute, and held onto a Rooney strike just before half time to ensure his side went into the break ahead. Made a great close save just before Jones' consolation strike.

The South Korean had a tough evening against the lively Nani, the Portuguese winger dominated him throughout and continued to run and run at the struggling 24-year-old full back.

The central defender was able to pick up the runs of Young when he got past Steinhofer and he made some good challenges to deny the United strikers.

Strong performance from the Argentine who muscled out Rooney at times, he was powerful in the air and made a few surging runs out of defence to get his side going.

The German was an attacking threat throughout the game as the full back and looked to get forward whenever he could. Defensively he stayed close to Young and didn’t give the United man much to work with. Nearly struck a crazy own goal as he volleyed a right wing cross against the bar.

The midfielder put in a good performance, and whilst he may not have grabbed any headlines his hard work was the setting for a good Basel performance.

Basel’s defensive midfielder had a busy evening dealing with the runs of Park and Giggs and he stuck to his task well. He won the ball well and was able to find the more creative feet of Fabian Frei and Xherdan Shaqiri.

A constant threat, he was originally setup to play on the left side of midfield but switched with Shaqiri regularly, and he delivered some dangerous crosses that were well cleared by the United defence.

The experienced striker had a fairly quiet night but he was the man to open the scoring in the ninth minute. He showed excellent skill to latch onto the loose ball from De Gea and volleyed it into the goal from 12 yards

Hard working striker, constantly giving Ferdinand, Vidic and subsequently Evans plenty to think about. He fired in an excellent free kick in the 54th minute which was heading in until De Gea tipped it over the bar. He did get his goal in the 84th minute though as Smalling failed to deal with a Shaqiri cross and he was able to head over the line from three yards.

The Spanish goalkeeper returned the United starting line-up after missing the victory over Aston Villa but he made a nervous start to the game as he flapped at a Shaqiri cross in the opening five minutes, and things got worse for him in the ninth minute when he made a mess of another cross from the Swiss winger and the loose ball fell to Streller who volleyed past him. Impressed with a fantastic save from a Frei free-kick, but he hesitated in coming for a late Shaqiri cross and Frei punished him with Basel's second goal.

Another impressive performance from Jones in the defensive role of United’s midfield three but he spent most of his time tracking the moves of Shaqiri as United looked to nullify the threat posed by the Swiss attacker. Again looked solid and dangerous going forward, although he was unable to really create any chances for his team mates. He did get himself on the scoresheet in the 90th minute of the game with a good header that just crept over the line but it wasn't enough.

Was able to stay close to Alex Frei and use experience to limit the chances for the striker, he worked well with Vidic and Evans but maybe could have closed down Streller for the opening goal.

Another competent performance from the youngster despite being out of position at right full back, he handled Shaka well but struggled a little when Shaqiri drifted to his side of the pitch and could've done better in the build up to Basel's second goal,

United’s captain had a busy first 42 minutes dealing with Frei and Streller but his night ended prematurely as he was stretchered off with a possible knee ligament injury that could see him ruled out for a long period. Replaced by Evans.

The experienced midfielder looked at home in the centre of midfield and showed excellent skills as he looked to pull the strings for his side. His vision and crisp passing created opportunities for Rooney, especially a sublime reverse pass in the first half but the striker was unable to get the ball beyond Sommer.

The Korean midfielder began the night in the centre of midfield alongside Giggs and linked neatly with the Welshman but together they were not in the most creative of moods. Moved to the left wing following Young's substitution and looked a threat to the Basel defence, although the power in his shooting was poor and rarely tested Sommer. Replaced by Macheda in the 82nd minute.

Without doubt he was United’s dangerman and was always available for a pass and always keen to take on Joo Ho and deliver crosses for Rooney and Young to get onto. Should have had an assist in the 30th minute but Rooney missed his low cross.

Still looking rusty following his recent spell on the sidelines, and struggled to really get into the game as Steinhofer kept him quiet. When he did get on the ball he didn’t really link up well with Rooney and he was substituted in the 64th minute, being replaced by Wellbeck.

The striker had a frustrating evening, which he spent the majority of which playing as a lone striker. Didn’t get many sights of goal in the first half but he did miss a sitter after half an hour, as the striker failed to connect with a beautiful Nani cross from the right with an open goal in front of him. He came much closer to scoring in the 50th minute after being released by Giggs, but his curling effort was inches wide of Sommer’s goal.
