Lille 0-0 Trabzonspor: Wasteful hosts squander numerous chances as both sides are eliminated from competition
In a one-sided affair, the French champions were frustrated by their Turkish opponents, but a late twist in Milan sent both sides out

Trabzonspor weathered a tempest from Lille to earn a scoreless draw in northern France, but it was not good enough to see them progress from Champions League Group B.
Needing a point to qualify, and for Inter to at least hold CSKA Moscow in Milan, the Turkish outfit played this match in a backs-to-the-wall fashion, and while they would ride their luck in the opening period, they were a good deal more solid after the interval and ultimately frustrated their more enterprising hosts.
The first period would be utterly dominated by Lille, and Eden Hazard in particular as the young Belgian was clearly keen to prove his quality in the spotlight. One superb dribble carried him by several challenges, but from the edge of the box, Tolga Zengin saved in brilliant fashion. Moments later, a more direct run was punctuated by a one-two with Moussa Sow, but the youngster’s drive whistled by the post.
At times the visiting goal was under a siege. Tolga was tested after only five minutes when Moussa Sow drove low into his arms, but he would be further stretched by a long-range drive from Florent Balmont, which was parried wide at full stretch.
Lille had further chances, too. Sow was a stud away from Joe Cole’s inviting cross, while the Englishman should have done better than to thump a fine chance wide when granted space in the box.
Trabzonspor’s sole first-half effort, however, was as dangerous as anything their hosts produced as a stunning Burak Yilmaz shot skimmed across the roof of the net, having not dipped quite in time.
After the interval, they pressed the game higher, but Lille still had their chances, but they were not the same fluid force they often were in the opening 45 minutes.
Hazard quickly had a shot turned away, while Marko Basa would direct a header wide from a corner kick. Before an hour had been played, Lille had been thwarted by two further last-ditch blocks.
In the closing stages, the home side probed, but seemed to have run out of ideas as to how to break down their determined opponents.
Indeed, it was the visiting side who looked the likelier to pinch the vital goal, with Burak pouncing on a nervous pass to force Mickael Landreu into his first meaningful save before Paulo Henrique fizzed a chance across goal but wide.

The dying moments were remarkable. After CSKA Moscow had taken the lead against Inter, a result that saw both teams out, Trabzonspor were content to time waste, clearly unaware of events elsewhere.
The farcical scenes late on detracted from a fine performance from the visitors, while the home side were left to regret a catalogue of fluffed chances. Neither will be involved in the Champions League come the spring, but the Turks at least will have the Europa League to look forward to.Follow the Champions League LIVE on Goal.com:
