CSKA Moscow 3-0 Trabzonspor: Impressive Seydou Doumbia double hands Russians first victory in Group B campaign
Goals from the emerging star and Cauna gave Leonid Slutski's men a convincing win over their Turkish counterparts, with both sides now locked together on four points
By Alex Mott
A superb brace from emerging star Seydou Doumbia gave CSKA Moscow a convincing 3-0 win over Trabzonspor in Russia.
Another goal from Aleksandrs Cauna sealed the win for Leonid Slutski's men, and condemned the Turkish visitors to their first loss of the campaign.
The main news going into the game as far as the visitors were concerned was still the absence of top-scorer Burak Yilmaz, who had one more game of his suspension to serve. The coach Senol Gunes however did return, taking his place on the touchline after serving a two-game European ban.
As for the hosts, they made two changes; Kirill Nebakin being replaced by 19-year-old débutante Semen Fedotov at the back, and Zoran Tosic coming in for Sekov Oliseh on the left-hand side of midfield.
With the temperature hovering just above freezing at the Luzhniki Stadium, and the visitors having produced just three shots on goal in their previous two matches, it looked before kick-off like a nailed-on home win.
The Turkish side however, were determined to attack from the outset, and in doing so produced the first real opportunity of the half. Giray Kacar headed just wide from a corner on eight minutes. It wasn't until the 30-minute mark that the match really sparked into life.
A wonderful passage of play by Trabzonspor culminated in Adrian Mierzejewski evading the Moscow defence and slotting the ball past Vladimir Gabulov and into the bottom left-hand corner. Unfortunately for visitors, the Polish international was adjudged offside and the goal disallowed.
Then, from the resulting free-kick, the Russians pumped the ball upfield, Vagner Love held off his marker, and with his back to goal flicked the ball to Doumbia, who, from 12 yards out, smashed the ball into the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead going into half-time.
A new half began, but it was the same player that was proving most difficult to nullify; Doumbia sprinting through one-on-one on 47 minutes, but this time being stopped by Tolga Zengin in goal.
With 15 minutes remaining though, it was Doumbia playing the role of creator. The Ivorian sprayed the ball out wide for Vagner Love and he had the vision to cross early for substitute Aleksandrs Cauna, who, unmarked, diverted the ball past the 'keeper at the near post to make it 2-0.
And it was Doumbia again 10 minutes later who made it 3-0. Receiving the ball 18 yards out, he turned Kacar inside, and lifted the ball past the 'keeper to celebrate a superb double.
The win for CSKA means they go level with Trabzonspor; both teams having four points as they head into the reverse fixture in two weeks' time.
