Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester City: Mario Gomez strikes double as Mancini's men are outclassed in Germany

Carlos Tevez refuses to come on as a substitute and Premier League side are unable to cope with the dominance of four-time Champions League winners

Champions League: Bayern Munich - Manchster City, Mario Gomez
Alexander Hassenstein
Manchester City are learning the hard way that the Champions League is a whole new level after a double from Mario Gomez gave Bayern Munich a dominant win at the Allianz Arena.

The German striker scored twice within the last eight minutes of the first half to stun City who had competed in the early stages of a contest which Jupp Heynckes's side completely controlled once they had gone in front.

Four-time European champions, Bayern had won their previous nine games without conceding a goal in the process and it showed as the FA Cup winners had no real answer to the questions being asked of them.

City, in their first Champions League campaign, slip to third in Group A still looking for their first win in the competition, whereas the Bundesliga team have won each of their first two games.

The early period of the first half was an example of back and forth sparring from both sides. Mancini’s side had the better of the early exchanges and within three minutes City could have been awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge from former City defender Jerome Boateng felled David Silva close to the bye-line, but the Hungarian officials were unmoved.

City continued to edge the even battle in the early stages when a powerful run from Micah Richards set up Edin Dzeko, but the ex-Wolfsburg striker's recent form deserted him as his shot was straight at Manuel Neuer between the posts.

A free-kick from Yaya Toure tested Neuer from 30 yards but the opening was still to come as neither side could find a way through the stout defending initially on show.

The home fans were growing restless as a lack of chances is not what they are used to and the collective mood was not improved when a Toni Kroos shot sailed high over Joe Hart's crossbar when he could have passed to Gomez or Frank Ribery.

Bayern were now improving by the minute, though, and Bastian Schweinsteiger could have opened the scoring on two occasions. The first was a result of nifty work with Ribery which ended with an unfortunate break of the ball, but the second was simply a horrendous miss.

Bayern caught City in possession and quick as a flash, Thomas Muller’s efforts allowed him to stroke the ball to Schweinsteiger who, from seven yards, spooned it over when it was easier to score.

Heynckes was visibly frustrated, but his mood improved within a minute when Bayern finally opened the scoring. Ribery’s long range shot was well saved by Hart only to see Muller pounce on the rebound, but the England keeper was also up to the challenge and an excellent reflex save denied him; but that’s where Hart’s luck ran out as Gomez smashed the ball home on the second rebound and to give the hosts a deserved lead after controlling the latter part of the half.

Frustration | The likes of Aguero & Silva were stifled in Munich

With Hart screaming at his errant defence, he was under the cosh almost immediately again when more poor City defending allowed Van Buyten to drift to the near post from a Muller free kick and head towards goal. Hart made an excellent save, but Gomez was again on hand to fire home the rebound even though he appeared to be offside.

Once the second half begun, it appeared that City had ran out of ideas. The team which put five past Tottenham and still unbeaten in domestic football were not in attendance and some curious substitutions from Mancini further reduced the chances of a comeback.

After 55 minutes, the effective Dzeko was replaced by Nigel de Jong and the Bosnian was furious to be removed from action and he made sure his manager was aware of this as dissention was rife on the City bench with Carlos Tevez joining in the arguments.

With Tevez on the bench the decision to bring on Alexander Kolarov and James Milner appeared to be an odd move as City were searching for a way back into the game, but Mancini would reveal after the match that the Argentine refused to come onto the pitch when he wanted to bring him on as a substitute.

After two Champions League games, City have one point and qualification for the next stage is looking a bigger task than many thought it would be.
