Liverpool comfortably secured their passage into the third round of the League Cup as Luis Suarez scored one and set up both Maxi Rodriguez and Andy Carroll as the Premier League side made short work of Exeter City.
The second round tie did however have it downfalls for Liverpool as midfielder Raul Meireles had to be taken off during the first half with a shoulder injury that will be of concern to Reds boss Kenny Dalglish.
The home side looked to get in the faces of their star studded opponents and they were not fazed by Martin Skrtel who went close with a chance at the back post early on, after the Slovakian got on the end of a whipping in corner by Charlie Adam, but the Liverpool centre half could only put the ball into the side netting.
With the Premier League outfit dominating possession with an incredible number of corners which they could not create an opening from, Exeter managed to break out and winger Daniel Nardiello won a free kick on the left wing after a challenge from John Flanagan.
That allowed Chris Shepherd to deliver the ball into the Reds penalty box, and with that he managed to find Nardiello unmarked, inside from ten yards out, but the former Manchester United youth player could only direct the ball into the arms of Pepe Reina.
Dalglish, who had named a strong squad for the visit to the League One side were dealt a blow a midfielder Meireles was forced to leave the proceedings with a shoulder injury and the Scot decided to replace him with £35 million frontman Andy Carroll.
Two minutes after that decision the Anfield club went into the lead as Jordan Henderson raced down the right wing before crossing towards Carroll, but Exeter keeper Artur Krysiak came out and got to the ball, but instead of catching it he palmed it into the path of Suarez, who fired the ball into the net to give the Reds the lead.
The injury bug at St James’ Park was to hit the home side next as their lone frontman Guillem Bauza pulled up in the middle of the park with no-one around him and ultimately the Spanish striker was forced to leave the field of play and had to be replaced by new signing Jimmy Keohane.
Liverpool should have claimed a second as Suarez danced his way down the right wing before drilling in a cross towards his fellow South American Maxi, but the Argentine winger couldn’t stretch his frame out to connect with the ball as he slid in and it sailed away for a throw in to the home side.
With only being a goal down to their most illustrious opponents, Paul Tisdale’s side continued to press forward, but they could not find a way past the Liverpool backline and Reina in the Reds goal and were ultimately forced to settle for going in a goal down at the break.
Exeter came out flying at the start of the second half and could have got on level terms as the long ball found Nardiello who had moved into a forward position with Bauza being replaced before half time and he attempted to lob the ball over the onrushing Reina, who had come out of his penalty area, but fortunately for the Spaniard the ball sailed over the bar for a goal kick.
With five minutes gone in the half Liverpool had a claim for a penalty as Henderson raced into the box and went down under a challenge from Danny Coles, but instead of awarding the spot kick, referee Tony Bates decided that the former Sunderland midfielder had dived and booked the 21-year-old.
The Premier League side eventually doubled their lead as Suarez turned from score to provider as at the second attempt he played a low ball from the right hand side of the penalty area in the direction of Rodriguez, who slammed the ball into the net for Liverpool’s second.
Dalglish’s side killed the game off as a contest three minutes later as Suarez was once again the supplier, getting the ball on the halfway line before finding Carroll, who had been subject to some taunting from the home support.
The striker answered those critics in the most emphatic way by putting his laces through the ball from some 25 yards beyond the helpless Krysiak and into the back of the Exeter net to put Liverpool into the next round of the League Cup.
That assist was the last thing that Suarez would have to do in the game as the Uruguayan was replaced by Stewart Downing as the Merseyside men looked to see out the game without picking up any further injures.
Downing could have added a fourth for the Premier League outfit as he darted in from the right wing, before smashing the ball towards goal, which Krysiak managed to deal with, putting it out for a corner to Liverpool.
With just over ten minutes remaining in the game, Exeter got a consolation goal as Skrtel dived in and caught Nardiello inside the box and the 28-year-old dusted himself off and firing the ball past Reina to the delight of the home support.
The home side continued to press forward, but could not find a way past Reina in order to give their visitors a fright as Liverpool managed to see out the tie and head back north in the knowledge that they would be in the third round draw.
