Crawley Town 2-4 QPR: Helguson at the double as Premier League side earn pre-season victory
The Iceland striker scores a brace as Championship champions win penultimate pre-season friendly whilst the hosts show they could be a force in League Two next season
By Ryan Benson
QPR beat Crawley Town 4-2 away on Tuesday night as their preparations for the Premier League season enter the final two weeks.
Around the same time last year, Crawley beat Tuesday night's visitors 2-0, but their guests were in a professional mood as they sought to make the second-to-last pre-season friendly worthwhile.
It didn’t take long for the Premier League new-boys to take the lead as Kaspars Gorkss got on the end of an Akos Buzsaky cross and found the net with a powerful strike in the penalty area.
Despite having some good chances towards the end of the first half through Josh Simpson and John Akinde, the R’s doubled their lead moments into the second 45 as Heidar Helguson got on the end of a Lee Cook cross that was played across the goal.
Charlie Wassmer pulled one back for Crawley after 58 minutes as he headed home a Kyle McFadzean corner with substitute goalkeeper Radek Cerny having little chance.
Ten minutes later, however, QPR regained their two-goal cushion as Buzsaky, when through on goal, squared the ball to Helguson who proceeded to take the ball round the keeper to grab his second of the night.
Number four for the visitors wasn’t too far behind as Michael Doughty – on as a sub in the 70th minute – dodged two tackles and then played the ball across the hosts’ net for Cook to score with an emphatic finish.
Wassmer grabbed his and Crawley’s second just two minutes from time as he got on the end of Scott Neilson’s cut-back cross after some brilliant play down the right wing but it would be QPR who came out victorious.
