AC Milan 1-0 Cesena: Solitary Clarence Seedorf strike enough to secure first win of season for champions
An early goal from the veteran Dutchman was the difference as Massimiliano Allegri's side recorded an unconvincing victory at the San Siro
By Owen Neilson
The captain curled in a cross in the fifth minute that left Nicola Raviglia with no chance in the visitors' goal.
Cesena were toothless in attack, causing the defending Serie A champions few problems as they eventually coasted to their first win of the 2011-12 season.
Milan named a much changed line-up from the team that drew with Udinese in midweek with Mario Yepes, Taye Taiwo, Urby Emanuelson and El Shaarawy all coming in. However, despite the fresh faces, it was one of the old guard who broke the deadlock.
After a short corner, Dutch midfielder Seedorf fired a ball from the left that looked to be a cross but arched perfectly into the top corner, leaving Raviglia backpedalling into his own net.
Cesena responded well with summer signing Adrian Mutu connecting with a header and defender Gianluca Comotto attempting an audacious flick from a corner.
Mutu continued to find space but couldn’t produce the quality that once made him one of Europe’s best frontmen and gradually Milan took hold of possession, winning a succession of corners without producing much quality.
Ignazio Abate fired a ball across the six-yard box for Antonio Cassano, but the striker couldn't net his second of the season.
In the second half, Cesena freshened things up bringing on Eder and Abdelkeder Ghezzal. The Brazilian was felled on the edge of the area by Yepes but Mutu's free-kick struck the wall.
Both sides lacked fluency for large periods but Cassano should have had a penalty when racing through onto Seedorf's ball. Cesena left-back Guillermo Rodriguez scythed down the former Sampdoria man, but referee Antonio Giannocaro incensed the striker as he waved play on.
There was more controversy at the other end as Gianluca Zambrotta tugged Gianluca Comotto's shirt as he crossed the edge of the area, but again no foul was given. Comotto was so overcome with the injustice he threw himself to the ground in protest.
Cassano cut a frustrated figure as he left the pitch, replaced by another verteran Filippo Inzaghi making his second subsitute appearance since a lengthy lay-off through injury.
The game petered out in the final minutes, but despite an unimpressive performance Maximiliano Allegri will be pleased to have finally taken maximum points from a relatively low-key affair.
