Only succeeded in pushing Caceres' header out to Perez, who scored, and really should have done better. Made one strong save when he dived at Forlan's feet but was less than convincing over the 120 minutes.
A less than impressive display was underlined by a late red card for a second bookable offence. Unable to help Argentina keep hold of the ball in midfield for long periods, despite having an extra-man advantage.
Got forward to good effect in the second half, but like Di Maria on the left, got into good positions but struggled for quality when it mattered. Blazed two shots well over and over-hit several crosses.
Looked shaky and struggled to deal with the aerial battles that came as a consequence of Forlan's free-kicks, even sending one dangerously towards his own goal. Scored a fine penalty in the shootout, however.
Argentina's centre-half pairing look vulnerable when put under pressure. And although he was only really embarrassed once, by Suarez in injury time, he was clumsy in his tackling throughout and never convincing.
A classy performer for Argentina. Just seems to do everything properly. Neat passing, intelligent positioning and one or two gliding forward runs were all on show.
Cut an impressive figure in the Argentina midfield against Costa Rica. Was often at the heart of his side's good work in the first half - and actually picked out Messi with a quick pass before he crossed for Higuain to score - but faded in the second half.
Á. di María
After a quiet first half, he became more prominent in the second 45. Although he managed to get into dangerous positions his final ball was too often lacking. Replaced by Pastore in the 73rd minute.
Had a fantastic 25 minute spell in the first 45 in which he was untouchable. Curled over a stunning cross for Higuain to head home and restore parity. Repeated the trick with a free-kick, but Higuain's goal was ruled out for offside. Not quite as mesmerising in the second half or extra time.
Made one impressive slaloming run through the Uruguay defence in the 15th minute, but failed to find the end product. Overall, a fairly uneventful 84 minutes for the Atletico Madrid man.
Demonstrated impressive movement to drift behind Lugano to plant a powerful header into the net to equaliser. Had an almost identical effort ruled out for offside and went close on several other occasions, hitting the post and drawing a fine save from Muslera.
An impressive display by the Uruguayan keeper. Made two fantastic saves in the final minute to first save Tevez's deflected free-kick and then Higuain's follow up. Had also denied Higuain with another instinctive stop earlier. Followed those up with the shoot-out save to thwart Tevez and send his side through.
An up and down night for the Uruguay captain. Went to sleep at Argentina's goal, allowing Higuain to drift in behind him and head home unmarked. But, at the other end, he crashed a header off the crossbar, while also standing firm in the face of sustained Argentina pressure late on.
A solid outing at right-back. Defended resolutely and began to break forward on the odd occasion in the second half as he grew in confidence.
Played at left-back where he looked a little uncomfortable at times. Messi exposed this uncertainty when he breezed inside him before crossing for Higuain to score. It was, however, the Sevilla defender's downwards header which Romero could only parry to Perez to score.
Replaced the suspended Coates but had was withdrawn after just 20 minutes to be replaced by Scotti. Did little wrong in his short time on the pitch.
Played on the left of the Uruguay midfield four. Made little impression in an attacking sense but worked like a trojan to keep Argentina at bay while his side were down to 10 men.
Was forced to double his midfield workload after Perez was sent off and did incredibly well despite possibly being a lucky to escape further punishment from the referee. Was physical and closed down and harried in a successful attempt to stifle Argentina.
Booked for a high challenge on Milito in the 33rd minute, but that aside, he worked extremely hard over the course of the 120 minutes. Made a crucial contribution to block Messi's low drive in the 117th minute.
The Liverpool forward was quiet in the first 45, but became more influential in the second. Threaded Forlan through with a fantastic pass in the 79th minute and danced past Milito before crossing for Forlan to head over in the final minute of normal time.
Caused problems with his set pieces, particularly free-kicks from deep positions - one of which resulted in his side opening the scoring. Also put over one exquisite volleyed cross which Lugano headed against the crossbar.

Replaced Gago and kept things ticking over in midfield without standing out.

Wasn't shy when it came to having a shot on goal. Was off target with at least four efforts, but did sting Muslera's palms in extra time.
- 5 E. Cambiasso
Came on in the 84th minute but struggled to have an impact. Moves often broke down at his feet, while he was also booked for a dive and missed his penalty in the shoot-out.

Veteran defender replaced Victorino after just 20 minutes. Was impressive throughout and capped his performance with an expertly taken penalty.
Replaced Arevalo in the 110th minute and helped ensure the match would go to penalties.
- 14 N. Lodeiro
Came on in extra time and scored a fine penalty in the shootout to put his side 4-3 ahead.
