Argentina's participation in the Copa America is over. Sergio Batista's time as manger may be too. The host and favourites are out in the quarter-finals. Uruguay are through to the semi-finals, winning 5-4 in penalty kicks after finishing 1-1 in regulation!
Caceres finishes with comfort into the right side! Uruguay win!!!! They are through to the semi-finals!
Higuain nails the crossbar! The ball bounces down and past the line, goal! If Caceres makes this one, it's over!
Gargano finishes for Uruguay! 4-3! Argentina have to make this one!
Pastore is up for Argentina. The Palermo man finishes with luck! Muslera got a touch on the ball, but it rolled in! 3-3!
Scotti for Uruguay, finishes with ease to the right. 3-2.
Tevez takes the third for Argentina, but it's save by Muslera!!!!!!!! 2-2!
At 2-1, Suarez takes Uruguay's second, finishing it with class into the left side. 2-2.
Burdisso takes the second for Argentina, placing it with care into the right of the net, just over the hand of Muslera!
Forlan takes the first for Uruguay, finishing in the middle of the goal with a powerful shot! 1-1!
Messi takes the first kick and fools Muslera, sending it to the right as the goalkeeper dove the other way. 1-0 Argentina.
First up is Messi.

That is the end of regulation. The ref blows the whistle as Batista grimaces. Penalty kicks are next!
Yellow Card Carlos Tévez
Two minutes left in extra time. Tevez is fouled on top of the box! Oh wait, the ref gives the attacker a yellow for diving!
Hard to believe what just happened. Messi had a few looks from inside the box, but again the Uruguay defence was superior, sliding in to block the star's shot. That really should have been a goal for Messi.
Five minutes to go as the penalty kicks get closer. Argentina look the better side at the moment. A breakthrough coming?
MUSLERA AGAIN!!! He denies a Pastore bullet from the right side! What a game this is turning out to be!
Unbelievable! Pastore finds Higuain perfectly in the box, but the striker takes one too many touches before firing a shot that is deflected out for a corner, one that Argentina does little with as Muslera makes a routine save.
Substitution E. Arévalo S. Eguren
Substitution Alvaro Pereira Walter Gargano
Messi!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ball finds the star at the top of the box after Pastore did well to keep the play alive after trapping a high, loose ball. The Barcelona star fired a low shot to the right but Muslera was there, making the stop with ease.
Argentina are in total control of the ball in the attacking half. The passes go from the right to the left, but they can't seem to find a hole to play through.
The second half of extra time has started, and Uruguay get an early chance. Forlan takes a shot from outside the box, curving a shot towards the right post but flies wide.
That's it for the first extra time. The second is about to begin as the teams switch sides of the field. Are penalty kicks upon us?
PIPITA!!!!!!!!! OFF THE POST!!! Higuain is sent through towards the left of the box by Zanetti, but the striker's shot nails the low post as Uruguay dodge a bullet!
Messi's lifting ball goes over the head of the players in the box, falling to Muslera at the far post. Good job by Uruguay defence to contain their assignments well.
Messi is fouled from around 33 metres out. Decent look coming for the Argentines.
Now we may know why Tevez didn't want to try from outside the box. His next chance, he fires his shot into the fans. Few minutes left before the end of the first extra time.
Both teams are having issues doing anything in attack. Tevez has had a couple chances to try from outside the box but decided not to.
Substitution Fernando Gago Lucas Biglia
Lucas Biglia comes on for Gago, who leaves the pitch with an injury.
Alvaro Pereira!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The defender nearly finds his third goal of the tournament after gathering the ball at the top corner of the box, but he can not get over the ball enough, sending it just over the top right corner! What a chance!
Yellow Card Fernando Gago
Messi looks to Tevez in the box after doing well to create space down the left side, but the world's top player puts too much on the ball, sending it past the by-line.
The first fifteen minutes have begun. At the conclusion of this session, 15 more will be played. If the score is tied after 30 minutes, penalty kicks will decide the tie.
That is the end of regulation! Uruguay had a late chance when Suarez took the ball inside the box via the by-line, cross the ball to Forlan who headed poorly over the goal. 30 minutes more to come!
Two minutes of added time.
TEVEZ!!!!!!!!!! NO!!! MUSLERA!!!!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!! The Manchester City man drills his free-kick towards goal where the goalkeeper makes the save with his leg after the ball was redirected off the wall. Muslera got up quick and also saved a shot by Higuain! What a sequence!
Rios takes down Messi near the top of the box. Great chance from a free-kick. Tevez here?
Suarez goes up against three defenders, finding his way into the box before G. Milito shuts him down with a precise tackle.
Yellow/Red Javier Mascherano
It is now ten on ten!!!! Mascherano is given his second yellow card! It's level now!
Missed chance for Uruguay! Off a corner, Forlan finds Lugano who heads the ball over the crossbar. Little time left in regulation.
Substitution Sergio Agüero Carlos Tévez
Tevez comes on for Aguero. Fuerte Apache is on in Santa Fe as the fans go wild!
All the tempo goes to the Argentines, who are doing well to attack. Zabaleta gets his chance, but he sends the ball over the goal by quite the distance.
Forlan!!!!!!! Alone in front of goal off a through ball, Romero makes the stop on the striker. Uruguay can't convert on the rebound as the Argentine defence manage to clear. What a ten minutes that await us!
Higuain!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Messi finds the striker again in the box where he settles the ball well before turning and firing a shot right at Muslera, who knocks the ball out.
Uruguay do well to clear the ball out for a corner. Argentina win another after failing to send a quality ball into the box.
Messi is fouled once again. Nice chance for Argentina coming up from 35 metres.
Forlan hits the wall with his shot. The ball fel to Rios who skied it into the stands.
Yellow Card Nicolas Burdisso
Substitution Ángel Di María Javier Pastore
Burdisso takes down Suarez at the top of the box and is rewarded a yellow card. Forlan will surely look to put this one on target.
Javier Pastore is on for Di Maria. Many fans in Argentina have wanted to see Pastore to get some quality time. Here is their chance.
Yellow Card Gabriel Milito
G. Milito takes down Suarez on the right side of the box. Good chance for Forlan here to send a ball in!
Tevez is warming up. On for Aguero?
Di Maria!!!!!! Messi sends the ball to the youngster in the box but his low shot from the left side is deflected by M. Pereira before falling to Muslera.
A change appears to be coming for Argentina.
Argentina look a little nervous in the back. Uruguay are starting to advance with ease.
Messi finds Aguero at the far side of the box with a low ball, but the Atletico Madrid man can't find anyone with his low attempt across the goal after doing well to get to the by-line.
There is a fan on the pitch! He put a hat on Aguero and the fans love it! Play has now resumed after the man was taken off the field by security.
Di Maria!!!! The Real Madrid man tries his luck from way outside the box, sending a ball over the bar. It looked like a quality chance at first but made Muslera hardly sweat.
The ball remains with the attack of Argentina, who are trying to infiltrate from every angle. Zabelta sends a ball into the box for Aguero, who heads the ball past the back post, not testing Muslera.
Yellow Card Javier Mascherano
Aguero seems to be really out of the game. His touches are off and looks a step slow.
Little to be seen from both teams in the opening minutes. The teams have failed to settle down and get into a rhythm. Argentina will certainly look to play through Aguero a bit more in the half. He has been absent for the majority of the game.
Here we go! The second 45 is underway! Which team will secure their spot in the last four? Or will we be headed to extra time? No changes for either team.
The second half is just about to start.
What are your thoughts on the game? Send them to @RCGonzalez10 on Twitter! The second half will be underway shortly. What changes would you make if you were Oscar Tabarez or Sergio Batista?
What a first 45 minutes. Uruguay will have to play the second half with ten men. Can they overcome the disadvantage and make it to the semi-finals? Argentina look solid with the ball, but their is too much open space in the box on set pieces. The guys are not marking well. The second half should be a cracker.
Forlan's ball finds Lugano, but he can't test Romero. Halftime! 1-1 in the quarter-final clash!
Another free-kick for Uruguay. A long ball coming in from Forlan.
Two minutes of added time in Santa Fe.
LUGANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! OFF THE CROSSBAR!!!! Off a corner from Forlan, the star defender skies to head the ball over Romero, but it hits the crossbar and goes over the goal.
The ball is played to Gago at the top of the box, but the former Boca Juniors star attempts to chip the ball into the box to Higuain, but his target is offside.
M. Pereira fouls Di Maria at the left side of the box. Fantastic chance coming for Argentina.
As I said, Perez had to be careful. He fouls Gago outside the Argentine box and is awarded his second yellow card. Disastrous moment for Uruguay as they are down to ten men now.
Yellow/Red Diego Pérez
Another free-kick for Uruguay from around 35 metres out.
Off a free-kick for Uruguay, Forlan sends the ball into the box but the header his off the crossbar, falling to two Uruguay's who were offside.
Perez needs to be careful. He has a yellow card, as does Gonzalo and Caceres. But the Bologna man could have given his second yellow on two fouls in the last few minutes.
Yellow Card Alvaro Gonzalez
Yellow Card Martín Cáceres
HIGUAIN DOES IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!! OH WAIT, OFFSIDE CALLED!!! Off the free-kick, Messi's ball finds Higuain, again, inside the box where the striker heads it into the right side of the goal. Nearly a 2-1 advantage for the host nation.
Free-kick for Argentina from 35 metres out. Messi won it after being taken down by Perez
Uruguay are struggling to get possession of the ball. After dominating early, Argentina have been doing well to switch fields and play smart passes. The flanks are open for them to attack.
Messi the magician is playing at his best! He continues to embarrass all Uruguayans who attempt to contain him one on one. He wins a corner for his country as the tempo is still with Argentina.
The game is getting more physical at the time comes off the clock. Gago is playing well in the middle of the field for Argentina. Where is Luis Suarez?
Substitution M. Victorino A. Scotti
The early goal did not seem to interrupt Argentina's plans. Playing balls to Higuain is the goal, especially with Messi starting the attack. All the momentum goes to the host nation at the moment as they look to keep feeding the Barcelona star. Who wouldn't?
Assist Lionel Messi
Goal Gonzalo Higuaín
GOLAZO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL MESSI!!! HIGUAIN FINDS THE NET!!!!!!!!!!! 1-1!!! Messi uses his magic down the right side before cutting towards the middle of the field, sending a soft ball over the defenders of Uruguay and right to the head of the Real Madrid striker, who heads the ball past Muslera from inside the box!
Aguero takes the ball into the box, waiting too long for the shot as Rios shuts the former Independiente man down. Wasted chance for Argentina there!
Nothing comes from the set piece as Uruguay manage to clear. Argentina are now looking to take down the left side with Aguero and Di Maria.
Rios goes in hard on Gago. Free-kick for Argentina from near midfield. It's a similar situation to one Uruguay scored on.
DI MARIA!!!! FOUL??? NO CALL! The Real Madrid man tries to use his magic and quickness to beat the entire defence of Uruguay. He is met well by Lugano, who slid to knock the ball away at the top of the box as Di Maria goes flying. The referee does not award the foul that all the Argentines wanted! Nice tackle by the rugged defender!
Yellow Card Pablo Zabaleta
It was poor marking by Argentina on the goal. Sergio Batista holds his head on the bench in disbelief. Uruguay are in control, going right at the defence of the hosts.
Goal Diego Pérez
Burdisso cleared the ball from inside the goal. The replay clearly showed the ball past the line. A early lead for Uruguay!
GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL URUGUAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Off a free-kick deep from near midfield, Forlan's ball into the box finds the head of Caceres, who sends it it low to the back post, beating Romero and falling right to Perez, who put it past the line!
Yellow Card Diego Pérez
OUCH! Perez plants two feet right into the leg of Mascherano. Only a yellow card given. Many in the stadium seem to disagree, calling for a red after the crunching collision.
70 seconds in and Argentina have their first chance! Aguero received the ball down the left side before finding Higuain at the top of the box, but the defence of Uruguay does well to get in the way of the shot as the ball deflects and rolls to the goalkeeper.
The game was begun! Uruguay are in white, and Argentina are in dark blue.
The fans in Santa Fe are ready for this tasty clash! Can Lionel Messi repeat his performance against Costa Rica? Was the match against the Central American's a real test, especially since it was the under-23 team? We will see. Uruguay have been in decent form, but they have not got much out of Diego Forlan. With Edison Cavani out, can the Atletico Madrid player come alive and take his nation to the next round?
Starting XI for Uruguay: Muslera; M. Pereira, Lugano, Victorino, Caceres; Gonzalez, Perez, Arevalo, A. Pereira; Forlan, Suarez
Starting XI for Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Burdisso, G. Milito, Zanetti; Gago, Mascherano; Aguero, Messi, Di Maria; Higuain
