Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick as Manchester United ran out 7-0 winners against Seattle Sounders in the latest match of their pre-season tour of America.
Michael Owen’s header gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead at the break, before three second-half goals from Rooney and further strikes from Mame Biram Diouf, Park Ji-Sung and Gabriel Obertan secured an impressive win.
It did not take long for United to take the lead, as Patrice Evra combined with Ashley Young down the left to set up Owen, who coolly headed into an empty net to put his side 1-0 up.
And it could have been 2-0 moments later, but Kasey Keller managed to turn Young’s vicious strike over the crossbar.
Owen and Federico Macheda had further chances before half-time to double their side’s advantage, before Anders Lindegaard prevented Fredy Montero from finding an equaliser.
Rooney, Diouf, Park and Ben Amos were all brought on for United at half-time, and it was not long before the visitors sailed into a 3-0 lead.
Diouf received a pass from Nani before rounding the goalkeeper and making it 2-0, while Rooney scored his first of the match by hammering the ball past substitute keeper Terry Boss.
Midway through the second half, and moments after Pat Noonan had struck the bar for Seattle, Rooney made it 4-0 after slotting past the goalkeeper following a pass from Park.
Park then scored United’s fifth after a clever step-over from Rooney, who grabbed his hat-trick with the Red Devils’ third goal in three minutes after good work from Obertan.
The Sounders failed to test Amos too much in the second half, and Obertan added his name to the score sheet two minutes from time after some poor defending from the MLS side.
After another comprehensive victory on their pre-season tour, United now face Chicago Fire on Saturday.
