Player Ratings: Barcelona 5-1 Valencia

Goal.com rates the players on show as Lionel Messi bags four to help Pep Guardiola's side cruise to victory

Víctor Valdés

Completely lost the flight of the ball for the Valencia goal in which he came off his line, allowing Piatti to score. Regained confidence as the game progressed and made a couple of good saves including a solid stop from a Feghouli volley.

Gerard Piqué

3.0

Came back into the starting XI after being dropped for the Leverkusen match and played with intelligence and made sure no silly mistakes were made at the back. A calmer and more reserved performance than usual, and this is currently what his team needs at the back.

Carles Puyol

3.0

Went to sleep for Piatti's goal but composed himself afterwards and help lift his side to come from a goal behind. Typically chased down every ball and gave everything for his side. Perhaps should have been awarded a penalty after being pushed in the box by Ruiz.

Éric Abidal

3.5

Displayed signs of frustration in the minutes after Valencia's goal but much like the rest of his team, calmed down and got on with his game. Allowed Feghouli too much space to get the cross in for the goal but after that did not give him a sniff.

Martin Montoya Torralbo

Quietly went about his job in the match. Was guilty of allowing Piatti to drift in from the left to grab his goal but gained confidence as the game progressed and even went on a few dangerous penetrating runs down the right.

Cesc Fàbregas

Went on a number of pacey runs into the box and was unlucky not to grab a goal. Was denied twice by Diego Alves, once from a neat curled shot from inside the box and once from the right when the Valencia goalkeeper made a good save with his legs. Also hit the bar with a fantastic swivelled volley with his back to goal.

Andrés Iniesta Luján

Majestic performance. Looked immensely sharp whenever in possession and was a threat at all times. Was the catalyst for Barca getting back into the match and helped create the second goal with a fantastic threaded pass through the middle of the Valencia defence for Abidal.

Sergio Busquets Burgos

Controlled things from the middle of the park and was neat and tidy in front of the defence as usual. Kept Jonas at bay and intelligently kept possession at times when Valencia looked to be creeping into the final third

Alexis Sánchez

Did not get as much joy as he would have liked out of Mathieu at left-back. Got in behind a few times and saw two shots well saved by Alves when he was through on goal. Had more joy when coming inside from the right and got some decent service into the box.

Performance shows why he is the current Ballon d'or holder. Ran at Valencia incessantly and they just could not handle him. Scored a magnificent four goals in the match with two close-range finishes, a pass into an open goal, and a truly masterful lob over Alves. An all round stunning display.

Pedro

Certainly looked sharp on his time on the pitch and had Miguel and Ricardo Costa in knots at times in the right-back position. But the vital final pass or cross evaded him in the final third. Replaced by Tello with 20 minutes to go.

Cameo appearance topped off with a wonderfully taken lobbed goal.

Thiago Alcántara

Came on as Barcelona were sealing the victory and slotted in nicely.

Tello

Came on in the second half and looked sharp and was not afraid to show his pace down the left. Should have scored but curled a shot over the bar from inside the box.

Diego Alves

Extremely unlucky to concede five goals considering he was in incredible form tonight. Made a number of fantastic saves including two close-range strikes each from Sanchez and Fabregas and a truly world-class save from a point-blank Messi header in the second half which he tipped onto the bar.

Adil Rami
Flop of the Match

Should have got the ball out of the box with more authority as a bad clearance allowed Messi to score his second goal. Awarded the Barca attackers too much room at times on the edge of the area but did make a couple of excellent interceptions, most notably on Fabregas a yard inside the penalty area.

Víctor Ruiz

Was dominant aerially but found himself wandering from his position too often. Communication with Rami was not as good as usual which ultimately lead to Barca's second goal. Eventually was overrun and outclassed by the Barcelona attackers.

Jérémy Mathieu

Had to deal with a sharp Alexis Sanchez down the wing and did so relatively well. Kept concentration and did not fall for the tricks of the Chilean, who only managed to find an opening once or twice in the match. Attacking play was hindered due to his defensive duties.

Miguel Brito

The right-back had a tough time dealing with the movement of Pedro and Iniesta down the left but his game was short-lived after he suffered an injury in the build-up to Barca's equaliser in the 22nd minute and had to be substituted.

Albelda

2.0

Had a good first half in which he provided a screen in front of the Valencia defence. However, as the game progressed he allowed opposition players to get in behind him and this allowed Iniesta more freedom to create in dangerous areas. Picked up a booking early on for a cynical challenge on Lionel Messi.

Sofiane Feghouli

3.0

Grabbed a fantastic assist with a lovely cross from the right wing for Piatti's goal. However, as Barcelona started to dominate he struggled in possession and failed to get any more decent service into the box. Was easily marshalled by Abidal in the second half.

Tino Costa
10
6
2.0

Was deployed in the Valencia engine room but he failed to have any kind of affect on the match. Stood off the Barca midfield when they had the ball and did not create any kind of meaningful attacks.

Jonas
11
7
2.0

Struggled terribly to establish any kind of link between midfield and attack. Displayed rare moments of class with sprayed passes to the wings but did not give Soldado enough service from central areas and did not offer Busquets much to worry about when playing in the hole.

Roberto Soldado
11
12
2.0

A spectator for the majority of the match. Did not offer any danger and allowed the Barca defenders to coast through the second half. It was not all his fault, however, as he had next to no quality service from wide or central areas into the box.

Pablo Piatti
25
10
3.0

Showed good attacking instincts to sneak in between the Barcelona defenders to grab the opening goal of the match. Faded in and out of the game after that but his performance was not lacking in determination as he often sprinted back to try and win back possession for his side.

Ricardo Costa

Came on for the injured Miguel at right back and looked shaky when playing out of position. Pedro and Tello always looked dangerous when coming inside from the left wing and he allowed them too much space when they did. Just looked out-of-sorts in the full-back position.

Jordi Alba

Introduced in the second half and save for a perfectly timed interception when Fabregas was through on goal, did not have a moment of note.

Mehmet Topal

Late substitution.
