Valencia 3-1 Getafe: Feghouli double & Aduriz clincher earn Unai Emery's side La Liga victory
The playmaker netted a brace during a first-half flurry which produced three goals in less than 15 minutes to clinch victory for the hosts
By Victor Ferreira
A first-half brace from Sofianne Feghouli and a second-half strike from Aritz Aduriz were enough to overpower a solitary Diego Castro goal and give Valencia a 3-1 victory over Getafe at the Mestalla.
From the opening whistle, Valencia easily took control of the match as Getafe looked content to sit back and let their opponents play a possession game.
Umai Emery’s men were at first having difficulties in creating opportunities as the Getafe defence granted them no passing lanes and were defending with 10 men behind the ball, but these problems would not plague Valencia for long.
When he was granted room to dribble freely for the first time in the game, Ever Banega sent in a cross from the right which found Jonas, who had his volley blocked. On the first bounce, Feghouli struck the ball towards the ground and over keeper Miguel Angel Moya, opening scoring.
Getafe would respond little more than 10 minutes later. After a cross from Juan Valera on the right, a heading pass from Dani Guiza found Diego Castro, who simply had to tip the ball past keeper Vicente Guaita to re-establish equality.
The stalemate would only last for a minute, though, as Valencia responded. Jonas found Banega, who went to the ground with shouts for a penalty, leaving the Getafe defence distracted. Still attentive, Jonas recovered the loose ball to find Feghouli, who slotted past Moya for a brace.
In the second half, Los Che continued to attack the visitors’ goal but spurned several chances to increase the scoreline.
But in the 76th minute, the home side finally capitalised when Banega threaded a pin-point through ball for substitute Aduriz, who managed to get by a charging Moya to find the back of the keeper’s net and confirm the victory for Valencia.
With the win, Valencia are now on 21 points, level with Barcelona before the Catalans play later on Saturday, while the loss keeps Getafe struggling near the relegation zone.
