Racing 0-0 Real Madrid: Jose Mourinho's men miss chance to go temporarily top after uninspiring stalemate
Galacticos go two straight games without a win in La Liga - the first time that has happened under manager Mourinho - and miss the chance to climb top of the league
By Aladdin Tobal
Real Madrid missed the chance to go back to the top of La Liga - albeit temporarily - after drawing 0-0 at Racing Santander.
Jose Mourinho's men began the match poorly as the home side was gaining the better possession from the start of the match.
Real showed their early frustration after German international Mesut Ozil received the first booking of the night in the 21st minute. However, the away side did show some strength in the 25th minute after Lass Diarra booted a powerful shot from 20 yards, only for it to go just wide of the post.
Madrid then had another wonderful chance to score in the 35 minute after Marcelo put in a darting cross in the penalty area for Callejon only for the ball to roll right past his feet.
A minute later, Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled outside the box for Real Madrid to receive the free kick, only for the Portuguese international to hit wide.
Real Madrid began to find their stride at the stroke of half time as Ronaldo struck a left-footed volley wide while Callejon nearly finished a header from a brilliant cross outside the box, only for the keeper to grab it.
The Galacticos kicked off the second half, but it was the home side who immediately came on strong. Serrano nearly found the back of the net in the 47th minute with a powerful volley aimed at the bottom right corner of the goal, only for Casillas to tap it away with the tip of his fingers.
Real Madrid were gaining more and more possession in the beginning of the second half. Argentine mid-fielder Di Maria hit a thunder strike from the left side that went just above the cross bar for the keeper to tap it away.
Both teams lacked to create chances until the 68th minute when Marcelo won a free kick after being struck 25 yards outside the box. Cristiano Ronaldo only found the wall with his strike before Xabi Alonso volleyed the rebound well above the goal.
In the 80th minute, Real Madrid were fighting for their goal in the box when French international Karim Benzema was brought down in the penalty area, but nothing was given.
Real Madrid gave it their all in last minutes of the match, only for Mourinho’s men to go two games without a win.
