Olympique Lyonnais 4-4 Paris Saint-Germain: Hoarau snatches incredible draw at the death for visitors

A memorable game at Stade Gerland produced eight goals as les Parisiens somehow avoided a first defeat under Carlo Ancelotti

By Robin Bairner

Paris Saint-Germain remain second in Ligue 1, despite securing a 4-4 draw against Olympique Lyonnais at Stade Gerland, in a truly stunning contest.

Hoarau gave PSG the lead as the home defence dozed, but the visitors roared back in stunning style as Bafetimbi Gomis, Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos all registering before a penalty from Nene made it 3-2 at the interval. Jimmy Briand’s header early in the second period seemingly made the game safe, but Ceara pulled PSG back into the game before Hoarau struck in stoppage time.

Very much second best in the early minutes, PSG were in control of the match when they took control of the game thanks to a well-taken goal from Hoarau. Jeremy Menez rolled a free kick towards the edge of the box from a wide area, and the striker’s movement took him away from his marker and allowed him to tuck a neat shot into the corner.

Gomis immediately passed up a fine opportunity, but he would soon make amends as he struck a crisp volley beyond the helpless Sirigu from the edge of the six-yard box, and an incredible half continued when Lisandro scored a goal that was almost a mirror image of his French team-mate’s only a couple of minutes later.

PSG were very much rocking at this stage, regretting a great chance missed by Hoarau that could have made it 2-0, but the quality of Lyon’s goals was outstanding. However, Bastos took that to a new level with a sumptuous volley from the edge of the box right into the top corner of the net after a set piece had been poorly cleared.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side managed to compose themselves but were still lucky to get a goal back before the interval as a needless challenge from Maxime Gonalons on Nene on the edge of the box resulted in a penalty that the Brazilian converted.

After a comparatively tame start to the second period, Lyon gained the upper hand once more and made their domination pay as Briand headed home from Bastos’ delivery.

Substitute Ceara brought PSG back into the game with his first touch, and the home side were thankful to Lloris for maintaining their lead thanks to a stunning save from Nene. Mathieu Bodmer should have scored following the rebound to Thiago Motta’s downward header but blazed wide.

In the dying moments, Bodmer hooked a hopeful ball into the box, which Hoarau headed brilliantly into the corner.

Despite avoiding defeat, les Parisiens remain second following Montpellier’s victory earlier against Bordeaux, while Lyon are fifth ahead of Sunday’s fixtures, but Ancelotti's men will have taken great confidence from their stirring recovery.
