Live Commentary

  • The final word from Simon Sinclair at the DW Stadium: "Full-time and a deserved win for Wigan as goals from Antolin Alcaraz and Victor Moses seal a vital three points in their quest for Premier League survival. Stoke were extremely poor as they just didn't turn up for this game. Roberto Martinez will be delighted with effort and determination his players showed to get the three points which hoists them out of the relegation zone."
  • FULL-TIME: Wigan 2-0 Stoke. Roberto Martinez's side bagged their first win at the DW Stadium since August, a span which has lasted 13 games, with goals either side of half-time from Alcaraz and Moses, who scored in the 93rd minute to seal a vital win. The great escape plays out around the DW, and they will need further inspiration with some difficult fixtures next up.
  • 90' + 3'
    Goal Victor Moses
GOAL! Wigan 2-0 Stoke (Moses). Game, set and match at the DW Stadium and what a fantastic win for Roberto Martinez's men. The fromer Crystal Palace man steals the ball from Andy Wilkinson on the halfway line and bursts towards goal, superbly holding off the defender before jinking past the keeper and slotting home.
  • 90'
Four minutes of added time here, and its finishing as it began, with both sides still going for it with plenty of end-to-end football
  • 86'
    SubstitutionJean Beausejour Conor Sammon
  • 86'
CHANCE! Fuller does well to beat Diame on the left-hand side and plays a dangerous ball across the face which Watson clears, but only to the feet of Jerome, who is unable to get his shot on target from 10 yards out.
  • 84'
Only real chance of the half so far for Stoke, with Shawcross finding space in behind the Wigan defence to latch onto a lofted through-ball. The linesman calls it offside, but unfortunately for the away side, their captain was a yard behind play when the ball was passed through.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionFranco Di Santo Jordi Gómez
  • 79'
Fuller has been quiet since his introduction, with Martinez about to introduce Jordi Gomez. Still a poor game at the DW, but if Wigan can hold on, this will be a massive, massive three points for them.
  • 76'
    Yellow Card Andy Wilkinson
  • 74'
Simon Sinclair gives us an update on Jean Beausejour's latest update: "Just when you think you've seen it all Jean Beausejour has missed yet another sitter from five yards out! This one granted isn't as bad as his first but it's still terrible as Watson's free-kick finds him unmarked in the area, all he had to do was take the ball down and put it past Begovic but yet again he scuffed his shot."
  • 72'
OH. MY. WORD. Jean Beausejour, what is wrong!? Once again, the winger finds himself in bags of space at the far post from a Wigan free-kick, but again he fails to even properly connect with the ball and Begovic easily scoops the ball up. Keep your pecker up son.
  • 71'
    Yellow Card Dean Whitehead
  • 70'
    SubstitutionShaun Maloney Ben Watson
Martinez may be looking to see out the 1-0 scoreline with 20 minutes remaining, but still a strange decision take Maloney, who has become one of Wigan's more productive players this afternoon.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionJonathan Walters Ricardo Fuller
Pulis switches his attack up for the final half hour, with Walters replaced by Fuller.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionJermaine Pennant Wilson Palacios
The wideman isn't happy with the decision to replace him, but Stoke need to get a foot hold in the middle of the park which Wigan just edging it.
  • 65'
Frustrating again from Wigan, with Beausejour crossing well from the byline to find Moses. Yet instead of heading back across the face, the attacker opts to chest the ball, which isn't successful and the ball goes out for a goalkick.
  • 63'
Simon Sinclair provides a further update, with the game once again becoming flat: "Stoke have been so poor in this game. They've looked so one dimensional, Wigan have clicked onto the fact if they stop the crosses coming in the Potters aren't a threat and they've been superb in closing down Pennant all game. This was typified as Crouch won the ball and laid if off to Pennant and he was immediately close down by Figueroa. Great stuff from the hosts."
  • 56'
Simon Sinclair with the lowdown on the goal: "Just when it looks like Wigan haven't got any quality in the final third they go and score. It's a great headed finish from Alcaraz as he peels of his marker and launches a powerful header into the top corner beating Begovic all ends up, from Beausejour's pinpoint cross."
  • 55'
    Assist Jean Beausejour
  • 55'
    Goal A. Alcáraz
GOAL! Wigan 1-0 Stoke (Alcaraz). Wigan take a a free-kick quickly and find Beausejour on the left-hand flank. The Chilean delivers a delightful ball and Alcaraz is there to rise above Shawcross and head the home side into the lead.
  • 54'
    Yellow Card Glenn Whelan
  • 53'
Much of the same in the opening exchanges of the second half, and Simon Sinclair tells us why: "Pretty flat start to the half, no-one's forcing the issue which is surprising for Wigan considering the position they're in. Stoke have been very poor and just haven't got going at all , while Wigan have lacked quality in the final third."
  • 49'
    SubstitutionMatthew Etherington Cameron Jerome
The winger has been forced off following the challenge from Boyce in the first-half. On comes Cameron Jerome, who will have felt unlucky to have been on the bench in the first place.
  • 46'
PENALTY SHOUT! Maloney does brilliantly to hold up the ball in the box before turning and cutting back across goal. The ball bounces awkwardly on Dean Whitehead's side, before it catching his hand. Mark Clattenburg waves away the calls, and it would have been harsh on Stoke.
  • 46'
And we're back underway at the DW Stadium, with Wigan kicking us and the deadlock yet to be broken
  • It's that man again, Simon Sinclair, with his view on the opening 45: "Half-time at the DW Stadium and Wigan should be ahead as Jean Beausejour missed one of the biggest sitters seen in the Premier League as he somehow managed to miss an open goal from two-yards out. The Latics will be disappointed as they've been in control of this game and would have deserved the lead. Stoke haven't been at their best and are yet to get fully going. Peter Crouch hasn't had a sniff the Potters will need to get the ball to him more in the second-half if they want something out of this one."
  • HALF-TIME. Wigan 0-0 Stoke. After a frantic and largley entertaining opening 15 minutes, neither side have been able to maintain their energy or find enough quality to break the deadlock. Jean Beausejour was gifted the best chance of the opening 45, but somehow managed to miss the ball completely from six-yards. If Wigan was the Wild West, he would be shot in a saloon bar after the game.
  • 42'
Our man Simon Sinclair is equally disgusted by the Chilean wideman's inability to hit the target: "LIVE! Goodness gracious me Jean Beausejour has just missed the biggest sitter of the season! Victor Moses beat his man down the right and found Beausejour two yards from goal with a pinpoint cross. All the Chilean winger had to do was tap the ball into an empty net and he'd have put Wigan in the lead but he somewho managed to scuff his shot upwards and the ball was eventually cleared by Stoke. Incredible miss!!"
  • 40'
CHANCE! MISS! WHAT ARE DOING JEAN BEAUSEJOUR!? Victor Moses plays a great ball across the face of goal after being released down the right-hand side, and with an open goal to aim at from six yards out, he fails to even connect with the ball, never mind miss the net. Truly terrible.
  • 38'
And now it's Pennant's turn to take a dig at Beausejour, with the ex-Arsenal player just catching the Wigan man as he looked to jockey the ball out of play. Nothing in it, and referee Mark Clattenburg does well not to produce the card.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Emmerson Boyce
And Boyce is quick to follow his team-mate into the book, after a real nasty challenge on Matthew Etherington. The winger plays the ball before the former Crystal Palace man caught his ankle in the follow through.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Jean Beausejour
Jean Beausejour finds himself in the book after repeatedly trying to rip Jermaine Pennant's shirt of his back. Stupidity.
  • 32'
CHANCE! Boyce makes an unbelievable hash of his clearance following some route one football from Stoke, and the ball bounces to Jon Walters in the box. The striker swivels well to get his shot off on the half-volley, but drags his shot just past the post.
  • 30'
Simon Sinclair gives us the lowdown on the opening half hour: "The game's gone a bit flat here at the DW Stadium after a rapid start by both teams. Wigan have looked the more dangerous side but have lacked the final bit of quality needed to get ahead. Stoke have been very one dimensional and have only gone as far as knocking hopeful long balls to Peter Crouch which hasn't been effective in the last 10 minutes."
  • 29'
Good defending by Robert Huth, who has been in fine form of late. Di Santo looks to feed Maloney inbetween the Stoke centre-backs, but the German just manages to get a foot to the ball before clearing.
  • 26'
    Yellow Card Marc Wilson
  • 24'
It's been a very open game so far, with both sides enjoying time and possession on the ball in the middle of the park, but consistently failing to find the quality needed to break the deadlock in the final third.
  • 20'
More now from the DW now with Simon Sinclair: "LIVE! Oh dear Emmerson Boyce has just shown why he's a defender and not an attacker. A good ball from Beausejour found him unmarked at the back-post however his touch was far too heavy and Marc Wilson was able to nip and win the ball from him."
  • 19'
CHANCE! This time a much better ball from Beausejour bypasses the Stoke defence and finds Emmerson Boyce drifting in at the backpost. The defender opts to take a touch however, allowing Ryan Shawcross the time to get back and smother the Wigan man's effort.
  • 15'
Simon Sinclair, our man at the ground, gives us his take on that Maloney chance: "Asmir Begovic is being made to work here in the early stages of the game and he's just produced another good stop to deny Shaun Maloney whose volley looked destined for the net. End to end game so far here."
  • 14'
CHANCE! Maloney drifts into space behind Andy Wilkinson and is found well by a team-mate. The former Celtic man hits the ball cleanly on the volley, forcing a good save from Asmir Begovic after the ball bounced just in front of him.
  • 13'
Extremely frustrating stuff from the home side. Alcaraz, Moses, McArthur and Beausejour keep the ball well around the Stoke box, until a loose ball allows Shawcross to easily clear.
  • 10'
"He drives when he wants, he drives when he wants!" sing the Stoke City fans, after manager Tony Pulis avoided a driving ban lately due to the, er, effect it would have on the local community if the club were to get relegated...
  • 7'
More from Simon Sinclair at the DW Stadium: "LIVE! Great save from Ali Al-Habi to deny Ryan Shawcross from a corner, as dives to his right to palm the ball clear. Wigan then break up the field through Di Santo who beats his man to go one-on-one with Asmir Begoviv but he hits his effort straight at the keeper who makes a good stop turning the ball wide for a corner."
  • 5'
CHANCE! Al-Habsi does well to prevent Stoke from a corner before Di Santo is presented with a superb chance at the other end. The striker finds himself free on goal from 40 yards out but is unable to hold his nerve and allows Begovic time to make the save.
  • 4'
Early pressure from Stoke at the DW, with the hosts camped in their own half in the opening 45. So far Tony Pulis' men have been unable to find the head of Peter Crouch, but they have started well.
  • 2'
Wasted chance from Beausejour. Franco di Santo does finds space through the middle, before finding the wideman on the flank in a similar amount of room. However, the former Birmingham man's cross is poor and the ball goes out for a goalkick
  • 1'
And we're underway at the DW Stadium, with Stoke City kicking us off.
  • Wigan are unchanged for the clash, with Roberto Martinez opting for the same starting XI that secured a shock 2-1 victory away to Liverpool last weekend. Tony Pulis makes one change to the Stoke side that held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Britannia Stadium a week ago, with Jermaine Pennant coming in for Cameron Jerome, who drops to the bench.
•'s Simon Sinclair is at the DW this afternoon: "Commentary from Wigan's win over Liverpool is being played over the tannoy here at the DW Stadium which the supporters seem to be enjoying. Could that victory be the spark that keeps the Latics in the Premier League?"
  • Wigan (4-4-1-1):Al Habsi; Boyce, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Figueroa; Maloney, McArthur, McCarthy, Beausejour; Moses; Di Santo. Subs: Kirkland, Crusat, Watson, Gomez, Sammon, Jones, Stam. Stoke City (4-4-2): Begovic; Wilkinson, Shawcross, Huth, Wilson; Pennant, Whitehead, Whelan, Etherington; Crouch, Walters. Subs: Sorensen, Jones, Fuller, Upson, Shotton, Jerome, Palacios.
