West Bromwich Albion picked up their first win in five matches as they took all three points against Blackburn Rovers. An early own-goal from Martin Olsson, a second half effort by Marc-Antoine Fortune and Liam Ridgewell's first ever Baggies goal secured a 3-0 win and deepened Rovers' relegation worries.
Blackburn manager Steve Kean made only one change to the side that lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Ewood Park with David Dunn coming into the team to replace Marcus Olsson.
Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, made three changes with Youssuf Mulumbu, Graham Dorrans and Marc Antoine-Fortune all preferred in place of Somen Tchoyi, Paul Scharner and Shane Long, while Keith Andrews started against his former club.
The hosts began the stronger side, applying pressure to the visitors, however they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. The Baggies eventually made their early domination count when an eighth minute corner from Chris Brunt, saw Gareth McAuley rise above Scott Dann at the back post and head past Paul Robinson. A telling touch by Martin Olsson on the way in meant the effort went down as an own goal.
N’Zonzi then recorded Blackburn’s first effort on goal with a shot from 20 yards, which was blocked comfortably for a corner.
West Brom continued to control the midfield, however Rovers began to accumulate set pieces but were unable to convert any. A few minutes after the half-hour mark Blackburn had their best chance, when an in-swinging cross from Bradley Orr met the head of Dann whose effort went straight into the arms of Ben Foster.
Although the visitors began to gain a foothold in the game, some tidy possession by the home side saw the ball fall to Jones on the right side of the box, his cross fizzed along the area but strikers Fortune and Peter Odemwingie failed to get on the end of it.
The game came alive in the last five minutes of the half with chances for both sides. Mulumbu had a tame shot saved by Robinson, while Junior Hoilett finally showed the ability that has impressed many over recent weeks with a mazy run into the box. He beat three West Brom men, but lost his balance just as he took his shot which looped over Foster’s bar.
Dunn then had another effort for Rovers, when Hoilett turned provider, yet his shot was weak and failed to test the opposition keeper.
Blackburn started the second half as they ended the first and Morten Gamst Pedersen recorded the first effort after the restart with a header on goal.
A poor back pass from Mulumbu then almost gifted Yakubu his first opportunity of the game, however good anticipation from Foster saw him save the midfielder from any embarrassment as he cleared the ball before the Blackburn striker could reach it.
Foster was then called upon again to produce a fantastic double save, first from a low shot by Yakubu and then another to deny Orr who had latched onto the rebound.
Rovers continued to pile on the pressure when Yakubu got his third chance in quick succession, a clever pass from Hoilett was met by the Nigerian but his shot flashed over the bar.
Hoilett’s significant improvement in the second half saw him at the centre of much of Rovers’ good play and he had an effort saved by Foster after dribbling past two Baggies players, however his shot was just not powerful enough to trouble the goalkeeper.
In the 68th minute after being on the back-foot for most of the half, West Brom made Blackburn pay for failing to convert their chances and doubled their lead. A fizzing cross from Chris Brunt eventually found its way to the back post where Fortune was waiting, the Albion striker took one touch to control and then fired it past the oncoming Robinson.
Kean brought on Mauro Formica and Anthony Modeste for Jason Lowe and Pedersen in the last 15 minutes, as Blackburn sought to increase their attacking options, however both substitutes failed to make an impact.
Five minutes from time a free-kick whipped in by Dorrans, saw Ridgewell climb above Grant Hanley and nod past Robinson. Although in truth, the goal put a gloss on what was a fairly average performance from Hodgson’s side.
Matters then got worse for Rovers with a late red card for substitute Modeste which saw them end the game with 10 men, but more importantly no points, as their relegation fears deepen.
