A last-minute winner from Juan Mata seals the points as Roberto Di Matteo's men close the gap on Tottenham and inflict a defeat which the Latics did not deserve

    Petr Cech

Made some fairly regulation stops in the opening 45 minutes. One hairy moment when he slipped during a clearance, but got away with it. Could do nothing about Diame's goal though.

  • Branislav Ivanovic

    Branislav Ivanovic

Dealt well with Beausejour in the first half, but the winger caused him more problems in the second. Was well offside when he put the ball in the net, but made an even more telling contribution by blocking a certain goal from Di Santo seconds later.

  • David Luiz

    David Luiz

Made good interceptions and looked calm on the ball. Was rarely troubled in the second half, and shepherded the strikers well.

  • Gary Cahill

    Gary Cahill

Was not too troubled at the back, playing the ball nicely and did well for the opening goal, keeping possession before feeding Meireles for the cross.

  • Ryan Bertrand

    Ryan Bertrand

Made some good interventions in the first half, and was effective in an attacking role. Was not troubled too much in the second half.

    Michael Essien

Shielded the defence well, but was not quite so sure on the ball.

  • Florent Malouda

    Florent Malouda

Had an early opportunity but did not sort his feet out and volleyed so wide it went out for a throw. Did not offer much for a lot of the game - his one real contribution was a cross that Drogba headed goalwards.

  • Raúl Meireles

    Raúl Meireles

Made a good tackle on Moses as Wigan threatened to hit Chelsea on the counter after 20 minutes. Gave the ball away quite frequently, much to the fans' annoyance.

  • Juan Mata

    Juan Mata

A couple of nice flicks early on, but was a bit sloppy in his passing. Had a good chance after some great footwork, but could only shoot straight at Al-Habsi. Came into it a bit more in the second half, but skied his only real effort. Was in the right place at the right time though to grab all three points.

  • Didier Drogba

    Didier Drogba

Came close after 26 minutes with a shot that went just wide. Had one header cleared off the line and another acrobatically saved before half-time. Held the ball up well. Picked out a great cross for the eventual winner.

  • Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge Flop of the Match

Played a couple of passes and flicks that gave away the ball in the opening 45 minutes, and the fans let him know about it. Could have squared for Torres late on, but elected to shoot and missed at the front post, with the fans really getting on his back.

    Fernando Torres

Came off the bench and had a couple of great chances after some good running, but lost his footing on both occasions. Hit a great volley and was unlucky to see it cannon back off the post, but it all ended well for the striker.

    Antolín Alcaraz

A very solid performance from the centre-back giving as good as he got in the battle with Drogba. Won plenty of high balls and also did well when bringing the ball out.

His pace caused the Chelsea defence some trouble, as he frequently turned and ran at them. Fired off a shot that Cech dealt with after 25 minutes. Carried on in the same vein in the second half, and was the best player on show.
