Norwich 1-1 Wigan: Moses earns point after Hoolahan opener but Latics stay rooted to bottom

A goal in each half from Wes Hoolahan and Victor Moses were enough to ensure that Norwich City and Wigan Athletic shared a point with a 1-1 in the Premier League at Carrow Road on Sunday.

There were five changes to Norwich side that lost at Stoke last week as Adam Drury, Andrew Crofts, Wes Hoolahan, David Fox and Simeon Jackson all came in. Roberto Martinez made just two changes - with Victor Moses and Hugo Rodallego handed starts for Wigan.

Wigan can only blame themselves for going behind. Simeon Jackson pounced on a poor freekick from Ali Al-Habsi to send over a delicate cross from the left.

Hoolahan continued the move, gliding past tame challenges to beat the away side’s defence and smash the ball home to give Norwich the lead after 10 minutes.

Wigan had a decent chance to get back level after 16 minutes when Rodellaga split the Norwich defence to feed in the marauding Jean Beausejour, but the latter’s timid side-footed effort was easy pickings for John Ruddy in the Canaries goal.

Wigan could have replied almost immediately via a freak goal when a cross from Emerson Boyce was clipped by Adam Drury onto his own crossbar.

Fortune continued to smile on Norwich just before the break as Ruddy spilled a shot from Gomez but Rodellaga lost his balance when trying to convert through the tight angle, blazing over from inside the area.

Second half substitute Steve Morison made a quick impact by collecting a long ball delivering a teasing cross which Simeon Jackson could not make a clean connection with.

Martinez threw caution to the wind in an ever-increasing desperation to find the equaliser.

The aggression paid off after 68 minutes when a probing through ball from Maloney was picked up brilliantly by Moses to skip Zak Whitbread and Adam Drury, round the goalkeeper Ruddy and slot home into an empty net.

Minutes later Wigan went close to taking the lead when more good work from Maloney opened up a cross for fellow substitute Mohamed Diame to inexplicably miss from only a few yards out.

Both teams were wasteful as the game drew to a close, and the final result was a fair reflection on the contest and both managers should be encouraged by the attacking flow of their respective teams.
