The Albion keeper had nothing to do in the first half as Sunderland’s attacking threat was excellently kept at bay by the Baggies defence. He made his only save in the second half from a long range Gardner shot.

The full back worked his socks off against McClean and kept the youngster reasonably quiet in the first half, he was also a threat going forward as he linked neatly with Odemwingie down the right wing.

He controlled the game from the centre of midfield with a dominant display. He was calm and composed in possession and was dangerous every time he had the ball at his feet. Ran the game in the first half, he was everywhere in both attacking moves and defensive ones. He scored the crucial second goal in the 40th minute after escaping the attentions of McClean.

    Keith Andrews

He was keen to impress on his full debut for the club and his efforts were well received as he worked tirelessly to close down the Sunderland midfield. He capped off a good debut with the fourth goal in injury time.

    Jerome Thomas

Had a quiet opening period but came to life with five minutes to play as he escaped the attention of Bardsley to find Morrison at the back post who doubled Albion’s lead. He was replaced by Dorrans midway through the second half.

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Started the game well in the centre of midfield as he fired in a pinpoint cross for Odemwingie to open the scoring inside three minutes. He worked well with Morrison and Andrews as part of the Albion’s three man midfield, breaking up Sunderland attacks and trying to push his side forward whenever possible.

  • Peter Odemwingie

    Peter Odemwingie

He scored a hat-trick in his last outing and he continued his rich vein of scoring with a goal with Albion’s first attack, he nipped in front of Kieran Richardson to head home Mulumbu’s cross. He was replaced by Long in the 81st minute to a standing ovation from the home crowd.

    Marc-Antoine Fortune

He led the line well, pulled the Sunderland defenders out of position and created gaps for Odemwingie and Morrison to exploit but the striker wasted two good opportunities that fell to him and he was unable to test Mignolet.

    Graham Dorrans

He replaced Thomas and looked sharp with the ball at his feet. He tried some neat flicks and passes which were inches short of being perfect and he tested Mignolet with a good chance soon after coming on.

    Shane Long

Replaced Odemwingie and was full of running but never got a chance in front of goal.

    Simon Mignolet

He could do nothing with any of the goals as the ball was past him before he could react, and the poor defending made things even harder for him. He made good saves from Olsson and Morrison to keep the score respectable in the first half.

  • Phil Bardsley

    Phil Bardsley

The defender had a tough time against the lively Thomas and the marauding Morrison. He was able to stay close to both men but he was unable to stop crosses coming into the penalty area and the first two goals did come from his side of the pitch.

  • Michael Turner

    Michael Turner

Struggled against Fortune due to the striker's movement, otherwise he was able to keep him under control and limit the number of chances he had.

    John O'Shea

Like Turner he struggled to keep the constant flow of West Brom attacks at bay as the visitors' defensive unit buckled for the first time under Martin O’Neill. He was strong in the air but the movement of Fortune and Odemwingie gave him problems throughout the game.

  • Lee Cattermole

    Lee Cattermole

The only Sunderland player to really impress in the first half, his tackling was strong and his distribution simple but he was unable to push his side forward. He kept trying to inspire his team throughout the second half but his efforts were in vain.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

He tried to support Sessegnon as much as he could but when opportunities were presented to him he blasted them miles wide of Foster’s goal. He brought the only save out of Foster in the second half as a swerving and dipping strike was parried away by the keeper.

  • Kieran Richardson

Kieran Richardson Flop of the Match

Had a tough afternoon against Odemwingie who constantly ran at him and past him with ease at times. Going forward he linked up neatly with McClean but it was not enough to impress Martin O’Neill who withdrew him at half time for Bendtner.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Showed glimpses of skill but they were all too fleeting as the Albion midfield dominated the game. Like Richardson he clearly had not impressed his manager and he was replaced at half time by Campbell.

  • James McClean

    James McClean

The youngster has had a meteoric rise since Martin O’Neill’s arrival but today was not his best day as he rarely made an impact on the game. In fact had he tracked the run of Morrison in the 40th minute he may have kept his side in the game, but he didn’t and Morrison scored.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

    Stéphane Sessegnon

A lonely afternoon for the Frenchman who was isolated in the first half as the Black Cats showed nothing going forward. The introduction of Bendtner and Campbell meant he moved out wide but he still struggled to make an impact.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

He had a hard afternoon trying to make an impression against Ridgewell who marshalled him well. He struggled to create any chances for Sessegnon, Bendtner or Campbell and was replaced by Bridge in the second half.

He replaced Larsson and looked short of match fitness, understandably, but he was solid in the tackle when needed to be.

The striker was unable to cap a great week with a goal, in fact after his introduction at half time he found life tough against Olsson and McAuley. He had a goal disallowed with 10 minutes to go, but he showed how sharp he is with a quick finish.

  • Nicklas Bendtner

    Nicklas Bendtner

Replaced Richardson at half time but was unable to get into the game and cause the Albion defence any problems.
