Wolves - West Brom Preview: Wanderers buoyed after ending nine-match winless streak, but Albion have only lost one in six away

The two Midlands rivals collide in the 146th Black Country derby, with the Baggies holding the bragging rights for the time being after a 2-0 win at the Hawthorns back in October

Sunday’s hosts have several players doubtful for the Black Country derby, with Jody Craddock, David Edwards, Kevin Foley, Jamie O’Hara and Ronald Zubar all 50-50 as most of them have missed training this week ahead of the match.

Meanwhile, Michael Kightly is certain to miss the visit of West Brom with a back injury, while Karl Henry is serving the last of a three-match ban this weekend. Also, Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has returned from his loan spell at Molineux to his north London parent club this as a result of the ruptured cruciate ligament, sustained in the win over QPR, that will sideline him for the rest of the season.

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson is still without key man Chris Brunt, who isn’t expected back in training until early next month. Zoltan Gera is also set to miss the clash, while Shane Long and Graham Dorrans are major doubts to face Wolves.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • There have been just three Premier League meetings between Wolves and West Brom, with the two sides having a win apiece in addition to a 1-1 draw.
  • Steven Fletcher (pictured right) is the Wanderers’ top-scorer this season with nine goals to his name.
  • A loss for the hosts on Sunday would be their 70th in four seasons in the Premier League.
  • Three points against QPR last weekend represented Mick McCarthy's 25th win in his 100th match as Wolves boss in the top-flight. The victory ended a dismal sequence of nine successive Premier League games without a win.
  • Baggies striker Peter Odemwingie has scored in his last two outings against Wolves.
  • Wolves have just one clean sheet to their name in their last 17 games; West Brom have managed just a single shut-out in 31 Premier League away fixtures.
  • Roy Hodgson’s outfit have not won a game in February in six years spanning over 12 matches.
  • Albion have earned 18 of their 26 points so far on the road - the sort of away form that would have seen them closer to a European spot if they hadn't let themselves down so much at home. They have lost just one of their last six away games (at Totteham).
  • This weekend marks the first anniversary of Hodgson's appointment as Baggies boss in succession to the sacked Roberto Di Matteo, who is now assistant manager to Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea.

The 24-year-old Scot has kept Wolves ticking over this season and become a vital part of their make-up as the campaign has progressed.

Fletcher is a man of opportunistic mentality who consistently gets himself in positions where he can inflict damage when his side are attacking. He'll be looking to punish the Baggies if given half a chance.

The one-time Arsenal winger is always a hive of energy for the Baggies and is utilised brilliantly out on the flanks where his pace and ability to cross the ball into danger areas are key attacking threats for the visitors.

Never one to stay still for long, Thomas will constantly be in the action helping his club get the play forward, whilst also performing his defensive duties in tracking back.

Prediction
A ferocious display of partisan support from the crowd is expected come Sunday afternoon, but with neither of these sides having a particularly positive time of it of late, the game itself might take longer to warm up than the fans.

The derby atmosphere will no doubt urge the players on, however, and whoever takes most advantage of this will probably end up on top. Wolves will be hugely encouraged by their battling come-from-behind win at 10-man QPR last week, but the Baggies have proved resilient away from home - and might just sneak another away win.
