Live Commentary

  • That’s possibly the best day back at the office Harry Redknapp could have hoped for after wiping the floor with a pretty dismal Newcastle side that haven’t shown such a poor display all season and is the first indication of their weaknesses. The hosts tore through them today thanks mainly to that man Emmanuel Adebayor who undoubtedly will take home the man-of-the-match award after some sensational football by the Manchester City loanee, with four assists and a goal of his own. A remarkable full debut for Louis Saha also is not to be forgotten after grabbing two netted efforts of his own as Spurs’ continue to hunt down the table toppers ahead of them.
  • And there’s the final whistle to end a truly tremendous match.
  • 90' + 1'
Three minutes to be played in stoppage time.
  • 89'
Coloccini looks to have brought down Defoe in the area but the referee sees nothing wrong with the challenge and Spurs’ claims for a spot-kick are dismissed.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionDanny Guthrie Peter Lovenkrands
  • 86'
A decent chance for Spurs goes begging as Adebayor again endangers the Newcastle goal with a wild strike that lifts over Krul and the Dutchman's bar.
  • 84'
It’s just matter of seeing this game out now for Spurs as they pass the ball with ease across the back-four. The hosts will see this victory as a true statement of their intentions as they add pressure on the two Manchester sides above them.
  • 80'
A stinger from Modric is kept out at the other end by Krul. The Croatian has been instrumental in this game and has pulled the strings in the midfield from the off.
  • 78'
He’s not had much to do today has Brad Friedel, but the 40-year-old goalkeeper makes a tremendous save from a header from Ba. The American reacts instinctively to the striker’s touch and the follow-up is skied over the bar.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionLedley King Ryan Nelsen
  • 75'
Time for another Spurs debut as Ryan Nelson arrives on the pitch for Ledley King who has been solid at the back for Tottenham this evening.
  • 74'
Adebayor comes within inches of doubling his tally after wonderful foot-work from Walker allows the right-back into the box to loft the ball up for the towering striker, but the man who made it five can’t make it six.
  • 71'
    Yellow Card Dan Gosling
  • 70'
It’s been brilliant evening for Saha, grabbing two goals on his first full start for Spurs and has paid dividends to Harry Redknapp’s decision to bring him to the capital when many question such a move with his contribution in this match.
  • 68'
    SubstitutionPapiss Cissé Dan Gosling
  • 68'
    SubstitutionLouis Saha Jermain Defoe
  • 68'
    SubstitutionGareth Bale Aaron Lennon
  • 68'
The first subs from Tottenham are due now as Gareth Bale and Louis Saha are replaced by Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe.
  • 65'
    Assist Louis Saha
  • 65'
    Goal Emmanuel Adebayor
Goooooaaallll!!! And that certainty is fully realised now as Adebayor gets the goal he has deserved from the off. The ball comes over the top to the striker in the middle who holds off his marker to pirouette on the spot and poke the ball past Krul.
  • 63'
The fans are also aware of how secure Tottenham’s lead is, with both sets of supporters barely making a noise from the stands of White Hart Lane, a place that is known for its raucous atmosphere.
  • 59'
The hosts have definitely suppressed the pace as this half has progressed and look happy to watch Newcastle become more and more frustrated as their attempts of getting back into this game fizzle out.
  • 55'
Newcastle are still struggling to get a hold on this game and so far Alan Pardew’s half-time talk doesn’t seem to have had much impact.
  • 52'
Adebayor again gets a chance to score after Kyle Walker’s bolt down the right results in a cross to the target man, but this time his shot can’t make it on target and Krul watches it drift past the other side of the post.
  • 48'
Well Tottenham have pretty much started off as they finished the first-half with Adebayor almost getting Spurs’ fifth and his first after all his hard work in the opening 45 minutes. However, the striker can’t make the most of a ball over the top as Krul keeps the pass out.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionGabriel Obertan Shane Ferguson
  • 45'
Tottenham get the game back underway.
  • A very successful half comes to an end for Tottenham which sees them enter the break four goals to the good. Newcastle have found it impossible to deal with their hosts so far and have conjured just a single real opportunity for themselves and will need a whole new game plan when they come back out what will be a very negative dressing room no doubt.
  • 45' + 1'
Adebayor rolls the ball into the path of Assou-Ekotto, but the left-back blazes the opportunity over the bar.
  • 45'
Very dangerous situation now for Newcastle as Parker is brought down right on the edge of the penalty area.
  • 42'
Tottenham are unrepentant in their attacking and win a corner thanks to great work by Bale on the right. Modric takes but the set-piece is poor and Newcastle clear for a throw-in.
  • 39'
    Yellow Card Kyle Walker
  • 38'
Friedel has had little to do in this half so far, but the American has made sure anything that has come his way safe in his hands as the former Liverpool man saves a long distance effort from Ba which in all fairness, looked a little desperate from the Senegal international.
  • 34'
    Assist Emmanuel Adebayor
  • 34'
    Goal Niko Kranjcar
Gooooooaaaallll!!! Well there’s no signs of letting up so far by Tottenham as the hosts punish Newcastle for a fourth goal. Four assist now for Adebayor who did superbly to keep hold of the ball in the middle after tenacious work by Bale. Kranjcar with a wonderfully executed shot finishes off the move to put the game well beyond the visitors.
  • 33'
Tottenham might want to make sure they’re not guilty off coming off the boil as a result of their three goal margin. We are only 33 minutes into this tie and Newcastle would no doubt take advantage of any such parking the bus mentality.
  • 29'
It should be said that Adebayor is only bested in Premier League assists this season by the maestro that is David Silva. That’s quite some achievement by the striker and looks like man enjoying his football so much that he might just stay past the summer at White Hart Lane.
  • 26'
Demba Ba tees up a free-kick 25 yards out and thought the effort is not on target, Brad Friedel gets a touch just to make sure. However, the referee misses the American’s contribution to the ball’s trajectory and Tottenham undeservedly have a goal-kick.
  • 24'
    Yellow Card Scott Parker
  • 23'
You’ve got to think how much of this Newcastle can take. Tottenham are letting their guests have very little of the ball and as a result Spurs are ruling every prospect of this match to their desire.
  • 20'
    Assist Emmanuel Adebayor
  • 20'
    Goal Louis Saha
Gooooooaaalll!!!! Another goal to Louis Saha and another assist for that man Emmanuel Adebayor. Modric races down the left and puts in a reasonable cross for the Togolese striker who lays the ball off for the Frenchman and Tottenham a deserved third.
  • 20'
Well, Alan Pardew hasn’t managed to grab a win in London since he took over at St James’ Park and for now it looks as though it might just stay that way. The Magpies have failed to get their game together since the whistle and the hosts have enjoyed the freedom their opponents have allowed them.
  • 16'
Tottenham attack once more, this time with Bale sprinting down the left. The Welshman pops in a cross which is barely cleared and reaches Niko Kranjcar who puts his foot through the loose ball and sends it over Krul’s bar.
  • 13'
Papiss Cisse has a burst down the right flank and whips in a delightful ball into the middle, but no one is there and it’s cleared without pressure for a corner. The resulting set-piece comes to the striker but fails to do much with the opportunity.
  • 10'
Spurs are all over Newcastle right now and are hungry to put the game past the Magpies with less than a quarter of an hour gone. Adebayor has pulled all the strings so far on the right side and has been a pioneer in Spurs’ early success so far. The visitors still look a bit shaken by the opening 10 minutes and need to calm this game down if they are to have any chance in getting back into it.
  • 6'
    Assist Emmanuel Adebayor
  • 6'
    Goal Louis Saha
Goooooaalll!!! Tottenham are on fire! Louis Saha has indeed added another to his short tally of goals this season and his first for Spurs since his move from Merseyside, taking hold of a perfect ball from Adebayor from the right side and volleys straight past a stunned Tim Krul.
  • 4'
    Assist Emmanuel Adebayor
  • 4'
    Goal Benoit Assou-Ekotto
Gooooooaaalllll!!!!! Just moments after Newcastle have a half chance, Tottenham break immediately from the clearance and it’s Emmanuel Adebayor the architect as the striker bursts towards the box and plays a superb one-two with Gareth Bale and the former places the ball across the face of goal and past at least two ball watching defenders to the back post for the waiting Benoit Assou-Ekotto to blast into an open net.

And Newcastle get the game underway.
  • So in regards to the team news, Louis Saha gets his first start for Tottenham since leaving Everton and will look to build on his single league goal this season from 19 appearances. Ryan Nelson is also on the bench for the hosts, whilst Papiss Cisse makes his own inaugural start for the visitors.
  • And here’s the Magpies’ line-up - Newcastle (4-4-2): Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon; Obertan, Guthrie, Perch, Gutierrez; Ba, Cisse Subs: Elliot, Ferguson, Gosling, Abeid, Ben Arfa, Lovenkrands, Shola Ameobi
  • Here are the teams in full, starting with the hosts - Tottenham: (4-4-2) Friedel; Walker, Dawson, King, Assou-Ekotto; Kranjcar, Modric, Parker, Bale; Adebayor, Saha. Subs: Cudicini, Bongani, Nelsen, Rose, Livermore, Lennon, Defoe
  • Hello and welcome to Goal UK’s live coverage of this Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Newcastle United. Harry Redknapp returns to the dugout this evening following his painstaking court case that has been very much in the public eye over the last week or so and was only displaced by Fabio Capello’s resignation on Wednesday. Spurs will o doubt look to take full advantage of Chelsea’s slip-up at Goodison Park, losing 2-0 to a plucky Everton side to heap further misery on Andre Villas-Boas. For Alan Pardew’s side, Papiss Cisse will look to further his success on his bow into English football after scoring the winner last Sunday over Aston Villa to keep the Magpies very much in the chase for fourth spot and will also be happy of the news of Chelsea’s defeat on Merseyside.
