Blackburn boss Steve Kean is unlikely to make too many changes after seeing his team take four points from their last two Premier League matches. Mauro Formica could be recalled in favour of Radosav Petrovic as the home side look for more of an attacking threat. Top goalscorer Yakubu misses out again following the red card he picked up against Fulham.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew will be hoping Fabricio Coloccini passes a late fitness test to take his place in the heart of Newcastle’s defence. The Argentine could be the sole change from the side who were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton at the weekend. Long-term injury victim Steven Taylor again misses out as does Demba Ba, Cheik Tiote and new signing Papiss Cisse who remain away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The talented forward appears to be showing signs of finally getting to grips with life in the Premier League following his summer move from SPL side Dundee United. Vital goals in back-to-back matches should fill him with confidence and his manager will be hoping he continues to score with Yakubu still suspended. His pace could cause problems for the Magpies' defence and he could well net another vital goal.

The former Lyon attacker has finally been given a prolonged run in Newcastle’s line-up after struggling to establish himself since joining the club, having seen his Toon career disrupted by serious injury last season. He possesses bags of skill which could exploit any gaps in Blackburn’s defence, but at times his end product can be found lacking. However, on his day, Ben Arfa is simply unplayable and recently scored a cracking goal. With his confidence on the rise his forwards will be hoping he provides them with a steady service.
Both sides will be hoping to take the three points for completely different reasons. Blackburn will hope to pull themselves out of the relegation zone, whilst Newcastle will be eyeing a victory to maintain their push for a Europa League spot. Both sides will have to do without their leading scorers, with Yakubu suspended and Ba away on international duty, so they will be hoping their other forwards find the back of the net. Neither side are exactly goal-shy so a score draw could well be on the cards.
