Player Ratings: Fulham 5-2 Newcastle

Clint Dempsey's second-half hat-trick inspired the hosts to a welcome victory in a seven goal thriller at Craven Cottage

    David Stockdale

Had a nervy early moment but recovered well to gather an Ameobi header minutes later. Made a couple of straightforward saves from range but was instrumental in a couple of nervy moments under the high ball. Did himself no favours with the second Newcastle goal, being beaten at his near post. I don't expect him to hold down a place with Schwarzer due back soon.

    Stephen Kelly

I lost count of the number of misplaced passes Kelly made in a very poor first half and I was surprised to see him emerge for the second half, particularly with Chris Baird being brought on. But he grew into the game and was much more solid in the second half.

  • John Arne Riise

    John Arne Riise

Did well aerially but another who was guilty of a few misplaced first half passes. Looked more solid in the second period but was beaten easily by Ben Arfa for Newcastle's second goal.

  • Brede Hangeland

    Brede Hangeland

Sloppy with his passing early on but forever dominant in the air. Managed to more or less hold the defence together despite Senderos' questionable play at times.

    Philippe Senderos

Carried the ball a couple of times early on but by and large his passing lacked conviction. Communication with Stockdale left a lot to be desired and caused a couple of nervy moments for Fulham under the high ball.

  • Steve Sidwell

    Steve Sidwell

Wasn't playing badly and passed the ball better than most in a white shirt but was sacrificed by Jol for Andy Johnson in a tactical switch. Lasted 38 minutes.

  • Danny Murphy

    Danny Murphy

Did his best to dictate play but the Guthrie-Cabaye combination often gave him little space. Took his penalty well and worked much better alongside Baird in the second half.

  • Damien Duff

    3.50

    Damien Duff

Created Fulham's first chance all on his own after some good footwork and direct running. His turn on the left flank and drive inside led to a curling right foot shot but it was well held by Krul. He was Fulham's best performer in the first half, though that says more about his team-mates than his performance. Did continue his good work by winning the penalty for the equaliser and overall looked lively against his former club.

  • Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey Top of the Match

Inspired Fulham to a stunning victory with his three goals. He was in the right place at the right time for his first goal but took the next two fantastically when played in on goal to take home the match ball.

  • Bryan Ruiz

    2.50

    Bryan Ruiz

Drifted from his right flank after the 20 minute mark and looked to get more involved from the left. However he was guilty of overplaying and after getting caught in possession by Hatem Ben Arfa, Newcastle opened the scoring. Wasn't given a chance to amend for his mistake and was hauled off at half-time

  • B. Zamora
    21

    4.00

    B. Zamora

Not at his best in the opening 45 minutes, failing to hold the ball with his back to goal and playing a number of loose passes - much to the frustration of the home fans. However with the addition of Johnson alongside him, he had someone he knew would be running beyond the lines for him. Grabbed a hat-trick of assists and took his penalty well. A tale of two halves.

    Chris Baird

Introduced at half-time for the highly disappointing Bryan Ruiz and provided great balance to the midfield. Kept it nice and tidy.

  • Andy Johnson

    Andy Johnson

Entered the fray for Steve Sidwell on the 38th minute and it proved an inspired substitution. He was instrumental in Fulham's comeback, twice terrorising Williamson in the build up to two of the home side's goals.

  • Tim Krul

    2.50

    Tim Krul

Struggled with a head-wind in the first half but it ensured he looked shorter when distributing the ball. Conceded five but was massively exposed for both Dempsey goals. Was lucky not to get sent off in committing the foul for the fourth Fulham goal

  • Fabricio Coloccini

    Fabricio Coloccini

He was certainly too easily beaten by Zamora in the build up to Fulham's second goal and brutally exposed for pace by Dempsey for the fifth goal. Poor day.

  • Davide Santon

Davide Santon Flop of the Match

Some will argue he should have received a straight red card for his foul on Andy Johnson but it wasn't quite what I'd call a clear goalscoring opportunity. Some may also argue that he should have received a second yellow for the foul on Duff for the penalty but he again escaped. By and large was poor and found out of position numerous times.

  • Danny Simpson

    Danny Simpson

Did ok at full-back, contributing well to early attacks. Wasn't particularly at fault for any of Fulham's goals but may have been found missing in the build up to the fourth goal.

  • Mike Williamson

    7
    2.50

    Mike Williamson

Was turned far too easily for the third Fulham goal and beaten one-on-one by Andy Johnson for the fourth goal. After a steady opening 45 minutes, he was part of a disastrous defensive collapse in the second half.

  • Yohan Cabaye
    9
    3
    3.00

    Yohan Cabaye

Was slightly more of a peripheral figure than usual and though he hassled Murphy and Sidwell early on and picked off a number of loose passes in the first half, he was conspicuously absent in the second 45. Subbed off for Dan Gosling with eight minutes to play.

  • Danny Guthrie

    Danny Guthrie

Combined well with Cabaye in the Newcastle midfield but importantly gave the away side the lead with a stunning left-footed drive from 20 yards.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa
    32

    3.50

    Hatem Ben Arfa

Had one chance of his own in the first half as he picked the ball up deep and ran at the defence. His low drive was tipped away by Stockdale though. Had a big role in the opening goal though, as he robbed Ruiz of possession and slipped it to the goalscorer Guthrie. Another who was noticeably missing in the second half, though he did show one moment of magic, jinking past Riise to finish low for Newcastle's second.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

Played one delicious ball into the box that Ameobi sent over the bar early on but couldn't impose himself in the middle of the park. His game is more suited to wing-play for me and he cut a forlorn figure by the latter stages of the game.

  • Leon Best

    3.00

    Leon Best

Found it lonely out on the left and so took it upon himself to wander inside to find the ball. Showed some neat touches but wasn't involved enough to provide a goalscoring threat for Newcastle

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

Had the first real chance of the game with a header from a Cabaye cross. It was easy enough to gather for Stockdale though. Despite a couple of long-range efforts and the odd header, he didn't look like scoring.

Substitutions

Brought on for goalscorer Danny Guthrie with 15 minutes to play. Ran around a bit but didn't do enough on the ball.

    Late substitute for Yohan Cabaye.
