Player Ratings: Norwich City 4-2 Newcastle

Grant Holt proved the key for the home team but Demba Ba was unlucky to be on the losing side in a thriller at Carrow Road, while Dan Gosling had a game to forget

    John Ruddy

Reacted well when Yohan Cabaye's first-half shot took a wicked deflection off David Fox and could not be blamed for his defence being split for Ba's equaliser, but nearly cost his side when he completely failed to claim a free-kick just after half-time.

  • Kyle Naughton

    Kyle Naughton

Could have been exploited more by Jonas Gutierrez at the back but put in a shift to support on the flank.

    Zak Whitbread

Making his comeback after several weeks out injured, the American might have done more to prevent Shola Ameobi from delivering his assist for Ba's second, but coped adequately overall.

  • Russell Martin

    Russell Martin

Showed good awareness to head away under pressure deep in his own penalty area midway through the first half. Had trouble dealing with Ba now and then and was taken out by Gosling for the red card.

  • Marc Tierney

    Marc Tierney

Careered up and down the left flank in support, but Obertan looked to pose him problems in his own half.

  • Andrew Crofts

    Andrew Crofts

An industrious effort on the right of midfield for the Welshman, capped off by an excellent cross to set up Morison's strike.

  • David Fox

    David Fox

Gave away a few fouls in trying to deal with Cabaye and wasteful in trying some long shots.

  • Wesley Hoolahan

    3.00

    Wesley Hoolahan

In the right place at the right time to grab the opener from the disputed corner but otherwise was not at his best. Never really had the space to cut open the Newcastle defence and was replaced with just under 10 minutes to go.

  • Andrew Surman

    Andrew Surman

A typically energetic effort from the midfielder, with some good link-up play with Tierney on the left wing, but ultimately without much end product. Replaced with 15 minutes to go.

  • Steve Morison

    Steve Morison

Found it difficult to have his usual impact on the game at times and seemed a little crowded by playing alongside Holt. When he did hold the ball up, he was prone to making the wrong decisions with it. However, his scoring instincts remained strong, with an excellent run to meet Crofts' cross with a fine header to make it 3-1.

  • Grant Holt

Grant Holt Top of the Match

A typically heroic performance from the captain, restored to the starting lineup. His doggedness ensured that he claimed the vital second goal in a period when Norwich were up against it, and his contribution in the build-up to Morison's soon after should not be ignored. Best of all, though, was his stooping header for the final goal that powered into the top corner. The key for Norwich.

Brought on to help shut the game down at 3-2 but made a bigger contribution with his great free-kick that set up Holt's second.

    K. Jackson

No time to make an impact as a late substitute for Hoolahan.

    Tim Krul

Harshly judged to have carried the ball over the line for the corner from which Hoolahan scored the opener, and could hardly be blamed for the other goals.

  • Davide Santon

    2.50

    Davide Santon

Should have conceded a penalty for a fairly clear handball in the first half and was conspicuous by his absence when Crofts ran down the right to set up Morison.

  • Danny Simpson

    Danny Simpson

An admirable performance filling in the middle from the right-back. He kept Morison quiet for most of the game and was a calming influence on his young partner Perch.

  • James Perch

    James Perch

Did a decent job having been drafted in due to the injuries to Steven Taylor and Coloccini, though Holt beat him one too many times both in the air and on the ground.

  • Ryan Taylor

    Ryan Taylor

Policed Surman well enough but failed to stop Tierney's runs on the overlap.

    Yohan Cabaye

Threatened to really make the difference for Newcastle but it never quite materialised. His defence-splitting assist for Ba's equaliser showed great vision and his deflected first-half shot nearly crept in.

  • Dan Gosling

Dan Gosling Flop of the Match

Not the midfielder's best afternoon. He fluffed a great chance on the volley in the first half as well as picking up a booking, before receiving a straight red midway through the second half for serious foul play as he bulldozed Russell Martin.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

A quiet performance on the left wing for the stand-in captain, failing to really test Naughton.

  • Gabriel Obertan

    Gabriel Obertan

Showed signs of being a thorn in left-back Tierney's side but was too often wasteful and ponderous with the ball at his feet.

  • Demba Ba

    Demba Ba

Showed a willingness to drop deep to help in the build-up of play and made no mistake when put through one-on-one to equalise. His first touch in taking his second was sublime football and evidence of a top-class striker.

  • Shola Ameobi
